Samuel Adalberg[edit]

Created by Piotrus (talk). Self-nominated at 06:54, 6 June 2019 (UTC).

  • New, long enough (though barely), notable, neutral, properly cited; hook is verified; Earwig gives a 40% plagiarism alert, but that's because the article is small and the titles or basic descriptions of Samuel Adalberg's work present as units of text. Hooks are fine but somewhat bland (one could consider adding his suicide as a result of the Nazi invasion, or him being a Jew doing this groundbreaking work on Polish literature -- reminded me of this guy); QPQ done. Dahn (talk) 13:03, 24 June 2019 (UTC)
  • @Dahn: I thought about the suicide in the hook, but I couldn't find a ref in English or Polish making that connection, saying so ourselves would be a possible WP:OR/WP:SYNTH. Ping User:Icewhiz, maybe he can find some sources? (Ditto for the second hook idea you mention, it would be nice, but I didn't see sources making such a connection). --Piotr Konieczny aka Prokonsul Piotrus| reply here 13:15, 24 June 2019 (UTC)
  • @Piotrus: - " Having heard that the Nazi were going to build the ghetto for the Jewish people, the scientist committed suicide on 10th November 1939 in Warsaw" - [3] (in abstract) + snippet view. Icewhiz (talk) 13:19, 24 June 2019 (UTC)
  • @Piotrus: I'm not going to press you into anything, and the hook is reviewed as is, but juxtapositions are actually allowed in hooks when they aren't our personal inference: saying two verifiable facts in one hook, even when they are from two separate sources, is not SYNTH, as we do not advance a conclusion we have made on the basis of sources. I'm not urging that we say "despite being Jewish, he contributed to Polish culture" (that would in fact be SYNTH), but at most something along the lines "that Jewish SA is recognized as a pioneer of the modern study Polish paremiology" (not SYNTH). Dahn (talk) 13:22, 24 June 2019 (UTC)
  • @Dahn: I am uneasy with this for the following reasons 1) he was not just Jewish but Polish-Jewish 2) this could create an impression that Jews in general did not contribute to Polish culture, a possibly controversial and biased concept 3) particularly in the light of the ongoing ArbCom related to those issues. I'd rather avoid introducing controversy to this DYK (in my evidence I discuss how two DYKs in Polish Jewish topics were derailed because of NPOV issues). So let's keep it simple and uncontroversial, shall we? But since Icewhiz were kind enough to reply and found a reliable source for the other idea, here is an ALT2, a bit more morbid, but that may translate to more clicks, eh? :/ .--Piotr Konieczny aka Prokonsul Piotrus| reply here 02:54, 25 June 2019 (UTC)
  • @Piotrus: Once more: my own comment above was not meant as an actual suggestion, and could be ignored entirely on these grounds, but rather as an attempt to clarify why it would not be SYNTH to add to facts from the article in one hook. It also does not disparage Jewish contributions to Polish culture, but would rather be a comment on how Jews and Poles are assumed to have been segregated due to Polish antisemitism being widespread (a claim which I myself see as grossly exaggerated, but which is very widespread these days), and also hinges on the fact that major Jewish contributions to Polish culture (i.e. not just Polish national culture, but Polish ethnic culture) would have been exotic, as any such crossovers are. I do understand and respect your reasons for rejecting this as the basis of the hook, and will not press the matter further. Dahn (talk) 04:14, 25 June 2019 (UTC)
ALT2: that Samuel Adalberg, pioneer of Polish paremiology, committed suicide upon learning of the Germans plans constructing the Warsaw Ghetto?--Piotr Konieczny aka Prokonsul Piotrus| reply here 02:54, 25 June 2019 (UTC)
  • ALT2 checked, as above. Dahn (talk) 04:14, 25 June 2019 (UTC)
