Major style problems, and it oversells the "mystery" behind the song lyrics[edit]

This is written up like something from a Phish fan site. It shouldn't be "Trey & Fishman." It should be, "Anastasio and Fishman," etc. Also, "Wash Uffizi, Drive Me to Firenze" isn't that hard to parse, and I don't have a cite on this off-hand, but it makes perfect sense to me and several Phish listeners I've talked to about this how an Italian cab driver could say this in reference to the Uffizi art gallery. The meaning was at least implicit if not straight-up in the mentioned Guitar World article. "Wash Uffizi" would be Italian cabby speak for "Watch Uffizi," which would be poor translation for, "View the works of art at the Uffizi." And in "Drive me to Firenze," the "me" is another example of the cabby's misunderstanding of English pronouns. "Firenze" of course is the Italian word for Florence, which houses the Uffizi art gallery. This lyric stumps the common listeners and is perceived as nonsense or a different language.

If nothing else, I'm certain that Uffizi is a reference to the art gallery in Florence, or "Firenze." Any humorous play on feet-washing is coincidence.

For me at least, the mystery is in "Boy, Man, God, Shit," though that too may have been addressed in the Guitar World article and I just forgot it after all these years. I do remember specifically reading *somewhere*, perhaps in Guitar World (I will find this, I vow!) that Anastasio and Fishman wrote the song while *busking* in Europe, and I don't remember anything about a trip. If the LSD thing happened, then it happened, but just as interesting to me is this song's origin as acoustic street music before it was ever played as a prog rock masterpiece.

I'm on spring break and will seek out this Guitar World article and try to revise the article. I haven't written for wikipedia much but "I'm a professional" (really) and can handle it. And if not, you'll edit me. Goth Fatty X (talk) 05:29, 22 March 2010 (UTC)[reply]
