"may be incompatible with... patent licenses"[edit]

Can someone please explain how the GPL is "incompatible with the MPEG-LA patent licenses in jurisdictions that recognize software patents"? If there is an incompatibility (what is that incompatibility?), shouldn't it be referenced on the GPL page? --MyOwnLittlWorld 02:08, 18 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

There's some patent issue with x264. That's why Debian removed it from their repositories. More than that, I don't know. --CCFreak2K (talk) 04:36, 25 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]
The text is no longer there, and properly so. Distribution issues can be affected by more things than than licence incompatibilities. --NealMcB (talk) 17:16, 5 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]

"x264 is a free software library for encoding H.264/MPEG-4 AVC video streams"[edit]

No...

x264 is a free software library for encoding video streams into the H.264/MPEG-4 AVC format.

OR

x264 is a free software library for DEcoding H.264/MPEG-4 AVC video streams —The preceding unsigned comment was added by 157.193.48.16 (talk) 07:42, 28 March 2007 (UTC).[reply]

Hmph, AFAIK x264 can't really decode anything, it's just an encoder. SeriousWorm 18:05, 7 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I made the original proposed change. --NealMcB (talk) 17:12, 5 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]
It's both. --CCFreak2K (talk) 07:06, 9 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Both what? x264 is only an encoder, not a decoder.—J. M. (talk) 16:01, 9 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Capabilities section redesign[edit]

I think the capabilities section of the article is very confusing and needs a redesign. I created one here using a table. Please tell me what you think about it so I can improve it and include it in the article. M@RIX 19:23, 3 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]

  • I like it, but it has some mistakes:
  1. "B-frame inter-predicted block types from 16x16 down to 8x8" is not non-configurable; the command is --partitions b8x8. Note that --partitions all simply allows all the partition types; its a shortcut.
  2. "Both Intra-predicted block types: 16x16 and 4x4" is the same. The commandline is --partitions i4x4.
  3. "8x8 intra-predicted blocks" is the same. The commandline is --partitions i8x8.

Other than that, its great. Fix those and be bold and add it to the article. —Dark•Shikari[T] 03:24, 4 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Thanx for the feedback. I fixed those mistakes and updated the article. There seems to a problem: "--partitions all" includes "--partitions i8x8" which is a Hight Profile feature. Should we move it to the other features section? M@RIX 07:18, 4 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]

As far as capabilities go[edit]

Wouldn't it be enough to just mention what Profile features it supports? and then append any extra features onto that...also listing all the CLI options is overkill (see WP:NOTMANUAL) - Xedaf (talk) 21:27, 27 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Well I removed the table for now [1], though any x264-specific features should be added. - Xedaf (talk) 22:04, 27 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Neutrality dispute[edit]

I'm having a hard time seeing why it was disputed. I only see facts... there isn't even anything that could be misconstrued as opinion. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 84.110.83.201 (talk) 20:26, 16 February 2010 (UTC)[reply]

I removed the tag

Why is URL Capitalized?[edit]

As far as I can tell, there's no reason for the "X" in the "http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/X264" URL to be capitalized, since the name of the software is "x264". I would correct it myself, but am not sure how; and I thought that I might end up feeling the wrath of the Wikipedia editors if I did. Damienivan (talk) 20:52, 4 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]

That is a limitation of the MediaWiki software. -- Ned Scott 01:34, 12 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]

First release?[edit]

Please expand the history section: When was the first release? When did it start supporting the High Profiles? Things like that would be an interesting read.--146.52.211.177 (talk) 16:49, 13 September 2016 (UTC)[reply]
