Covered conditions[edit]

The WTC Health Program has new covered conditions: WTC-exacerbated and new-onset chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), acute traumatic injury, burn, complex sprain, eye injury, fracture, head trauma and other similar acute traumatic injuries, and tendon tear. The program publishes a list of covered conditions. If someone could update the article I would appreciate it; as a NIOSH contractor I abstain from editing the page directly. James Hare (NIOSH) (talk) 13:21, 16 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]

So what good does this info tell us without the statistics on the sicknesses? A user could now visit this WP article and say "I'm glad I went to Wikipedia today and found out my chronic condition induced by breathing in the rubble (or whatever injury) from 9/11 is covered by the WTCHP"? They would not know how many people are covered by the program , what the spread of illnesses are, how many people died for what illnesses. Why are they going to use this page when every source out there has actul data?

Where's the DATA?[edit]

This article appears to be a dissemination on the WTCHP. Wheres the data for over 37,000 people tracked since 9/11? I came out today to research what percentage of people who died from 9/11 related effects who were tracked as part of this program, died of cancers vs other diseases. (The media is harping specifically on "cancer" so I decided to do my own research.)

Clearly, doing that on Wikipedia is a mistake. This article serves no purpose, I might as well read the original document since it has the important DATA where as this article is... Fluff, history, with "NO CREAM FILLING".

Put something actually meaningful like data and numbers in this article, why waste someone's time explaining what health conditions this program covers, what am I, insurance shopping? This article stinks. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 162.219.204.36 (talk) 00:01, 12 September 2016 (UTC)[reply]

I have asked to see if there is data available. James Hare (NIOSH) (talk) 15:21, 6 December 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Request for edit[edit]

I would like to request an edit to be made to this page. Specifically, I would like the section on the Zadroga bill to instead link to the James Zadroga 9/11 Health and Compensation Act, with the section rewritten to summarize that article. Now that there is a separate article, there is no need to have all this information in multiple places. James Hare (NIOSH) (talk) 14:38, 6 December 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Pentagon and Shanksville program[edit]

The article says that the program for Pentagon and Shanksville responeres will open in 2012 and needs to be updated. The final sentence should be replaced with "The eligible group includes fire and police department employees, recovery or cleanup workers and contractors, and volunteers who took part in the rescue, recovery, demolition, debris cleanup, or other related services after the September 11 attacks at the Pentagon or the crash site in Shanksville, Pennsylvania. Enrollment for responders at these locations started on May 1, 2013.[1]" Thanks. John P. Sadowski (NIOSH) (talk) 16:51, 30 January 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Requested updates[edit]

I have a conflict of interest for this article because I'm a paid Wikipedian-in-Residence with NIOSH, which administers the WTC health program. Most of these are identifying or updating outdated statistics and other information. Changed text is in italics where appropriate.

  1. ^ This section encompasses a large amount of text. It is unclear from the direction "so it can be reduced" what text is to be removed. Please clarify.
  2. ^ "Data centers" as it reads in the heading title refers to their function as centers for collecting data, not the center's full title.
  3. ^ The specific location for this change was not noted. Please advise.
  4. ^ Information on full up-to-date eligibility guidelines should come from the website responsible for posting this information. That website is listed in the article section in question.
  5. ^ Added to the Pentagon and Shanksville section.

@Spintendo: Thanks for the quick reply! Responses below:

  • In the James L. Zadroga 9/11 Health and Compensation Act section, this text is duplicated in the subarticle so it can be reduced here to comply with WP:SUMMARY. Here's what I recommend:
    • Change the hat-note to point to James Zadroga 9/11 Health and Compensation Act.
    • In paragraph 2, remove "New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg asked the Senate to do the same.[23]" and "Opposed Republicans expressed concerns ... was appropriately funded for the next several months.[26][28]"
    • In paragraph 3, remove "Guests included ... the bill's political struggle in Congress." but keep all three refs after the first sentence. Remove "White House Press Secretary Robert Gibbs acknowledged ... led to the final agreement" but again keep the refs.
    • In paragraph 4, remove the final sentence.
  • In the Conditions covered by the WTC Health Program section, World Trade Center Health Program should be unlinked.
  • "Data Center" should be capitalized because it is part of the formal name. See [1] and [2].
  • "New York City Health and Hospitals Corporation" should be updated to "NYC Health + Hospitals WTC Environmental Health Center" at the very end of the WTC Health Program Data Centers section.

  1. ^ The sentence "this text is duplicated in the subarticle so it can be reduced here" is unclear as to what this text, it, and here refers to. Please clarify. It is also unclear what hat-note refers to.
  2. ^ The sentence "New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg asked the Senate to do the same", which actually resides in paragraph #12, was removed. The sentence "Opposed Republicans expressed concerns ... was appropriately funded for the next several months" does not exist in that form anywhere in the article. The sentence in the proposal appears to be a hybrid of the beginning of one sentence combined through an ellipsis with the end of another sentence. However, it has not been established with absolute certainty that by using an ellipsis it is meant for all of the sentences in between to be removed. Additionally, the number of references suggested which would be removed (indicated by the presence of the bracketed numbers [26] and [28] in the proposal) does not account for the actual number of references which would be removed if one were to remove everything in-between the place of the ellipsis in the hybridized sentence. This would in fact remove six references — not two. Thus, no action could be taken here. Please clarify exactly which sentence(s) are to be removed.
  3. ^ If the references reference a sentence which is later removed, the reference which references the removed sentence has no other sentence to reference without being placed in another location. After these sentences are removed, it is unclear where the references are to be kept. Please clarify where these references are to be placed. If they are to be placed in the sentence which immediately preceded the deleted sentence, then the request should state this by typing out the sentence.
  4. ^ The final sentence of paragraph #4 (counting from the first paragraph of the article) reads: These effects include elevated levels of asthma, sinusitis, Gastroesophageal reflux disease and posttraumatic stress disorder. Given the mis-numbering of paragraph #2 mentioned under Note#2, this request cannot be carried out without further clarification.
  5. ^ As the paragraph under this section refers to multiple centers, its heading was changed to Data centers

@Spintendo:

  • A hat-note is a template with italicized text at the top of a section. See Wikipedia:Hatnote. In this case, it should be replaced with {{Main|James Zadroga 9/11 Health and Compensation Act}}.
  • The paragraph numbers refer to the order in the James L. Zadroga 9/11 Health and Compensation Act section, not the whole article. These requests relate to the first through fourth paragraphs of that section.
  • Yes, the ellipses are meant to indicate that all the next between the quoted fragments should be removed. For paragraph 2 this includes removing all the intervening references. For paragraph 3, place the references after the sentence that immediately precedes the deleted sentences.

Thanks. John P. Sadowski (NIOSH) (talk) 02:42, 17 April 2018 (UTC)[reply]
