School / Article name?[edit]

According to the Dept of Ed and school's own website, "The White Mountain School" is really the "White Mountain School". If no one argues, I'm going to move this page to White Mountain School and redirect this one to there. -- SatyrTN (talk | contribs) 03:30, 20 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

White Mountain SchoolThe White Mountain School – Please change "White Mountain School" to "The White Mountain School" thank you! • This should be discussed, given the previous move (see the section above this). Wbm1058 (talk) 19:07, 17 July 2014 (UTC)[reply]
  • Comment Why? You haven't provided any reason this should be renamed -- 65.94.171.126 (talk) 04:48, 18 July 2014 (UTC)[reply]
  • Comment If you actually look at our website we are The White Mountain School and there is a "White Mountain School" in Alaska we don't want to be confused with. We may also be preventing them from having their own wikipedia page. We used to be White Mountain School a while ago but we changed our name and would like to be consistent on all publications and representations. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Ayakaokawa (talkcontribs) 2014-07-21 15:44:50
Hello again - There's no problem with potential confusion with the school in Alaska. Generally, similar names are best disambiguated using geography, e.g. "White Mountain School (Alaska)", rather than simply by using "The" or not. I don't get the sense that you read the Wikipedia guidelines that I listed above; if you haven't yet, please do so when you get the chance. Also, please remember that no one "owns" this article, and it is not a WMS publication. --Ken Gallager (talk) 17:59, 21 July 2014 (UTC)[reply]
And I'm sorry if that sounds kind of stuffy. To me, the main issue comes down to whether in common usage "The" is part of the name. That is, not just by the school on its official documents, but by the public at large. Which is why I suggest looking at George Washington University as an example - they use "The" throughout their publications, but no one else does. I did a quick Google search to see if there are any independent sources using the name one way or the other and did not come up with any immediate answer. One strike against "The" is the fact that the school's initials seem to be WMS, not TMWS. I can think of The Nature Conservancy (TNC) as the counter-example. --Ken Gallager (talk) 18:10, 21 July 2014 (UTC)[reply]
  • Oppose per everything that User:Ken Gallager said. We very rarely include the definite article in the article title unless there are extenuating circumstances. There's no special reason to do it here. -- Necrothesp (talk) 17:35, 24 July 2014 (UTC)[reply]
