redirect convert to dab?[edit]

Is it worth changing this from a redirect, to a disambig page - one to Caribbean, one to British West Indies (as in the countries that make up the cricket team?) --Chuq 05:20, 6 Mar 2004 (UTC)

Yes especially since for much of the cricketing world this term will refer to the cricket team, so arguably meaning carries the same weight with the term, will also correct the top of the carribean page 81.152.228.48 (talk) 10:08, 10 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I concur with this assessment, surely both the arguments above and common sense suggest it should go to West Indies (disambig) given the page already exists, also West Indes and West indies both currently redirect to the disambig page and Carribean is the first option there Gamma2delta (talk) 21:40, 29 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Redirect[edit]

I'd like to redirect this to the dab page, West Indies (disambiguation), which is more informative about the history. Any objections? SlimVirgin TALK|CONTRIBS 23:30, 13 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]

I'll go ahead and do that. We can move it back if there's an objection. SlimVirgin TALK|CONTRIBS 23:11, 14 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]
It seems pretty clear that the primary topic for West Indies is the whole region, which is what this article covers. You reasoning has nothing to do with what is or isn't the primary topic. If there's no clear primary topic, than the DAB page should be at West Indies. It's probably best to propose moving the DAB page, rather than redirecting to it. - BilCat (talk) 23:17, 14 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Frankly, I'd like to see Caribbean moved to West Indies. There doesn't apprea to have ever been a complete move discussion on Talk:Caribbean, a link to one elsewhere. I'm considering proposing it there. - BilCat (talk) 23:31, 14 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Primary topic[edit]

My change of the redirect from Caribbean to West Indies (disambuation) was reverted with the reason WP:Primary topic. But that page says

If there is no primary topic, the term should be the title of a disambiguation page (or should redirect to a disambiguation page on which more than one term is disambiguated).

Since Caribbean is not the primary topic of West Indies, with Caribbean referring to e.g. Suriname, Guyana, French Guiana, Venezuela, Colombia, Panama, Nicaragua, Honduras, Belize, Mexico, etc., as well as to only a subset of the West Indies, there is no primary topic article. So as per wp:primary topic, this page should redirect to a disambiguation page. Duoduoduo (talk) 00:55, 20 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]

If there is no (longer) a primary topic, the disambiguation page should be moved here. Redirecting X to X (disambiguation) is WP:MALPLACED. -- JHunterJ (talk) 12:30, 20 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Okay. Could you do that? -- I have no idea how. I take it that it has to be a merger of two pages into one, with the title of this one and the content of that one, but I don't know how to do a merger. Duoduoduo (talk) 16:06, 20 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]
I do not have an opinion on whether the current primary topic should continue to be the primary topic. But you can use WP:RM to initiate the discussion to move the page, and if there's consensus for the change, I or another admin can carry it out. -- JHunterJ (talk) 16:10, 20 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Plan to merge without discussion[edit]

As per earlier threads on Talk:West Indies, it makes no sense to have one page called West Indies (disambiguation) and another page called West Indies that redirects to Caribbean. The West Indies is not a subset of the Caribbean, and the Caribbean is not a subset of the West Indies. Since there is no article on the West Indies as a whole, there is no primary topic article, and the disambiguation page should be called simply West Indies.

It seems so obvious that Caribbean is not the primary topic of West Indies, and this was mentioned on Talk:West Indies in earlier years but apparently never done. So as per WP:Proposed mergers and Help:Merging, I'm going to be bold and just merge them, as soon as I get time. The content will be identical to the current content at West Indies (disambiguation), and the title will be West Indies. Also the mis-capitalized West indies will redirect to the merged page.

Let me know before I do it if you think there's a reason to have a merger discussion first. But as Help:Merging says,

Merging is a normal editing action, something any editor can do, and as such generally does not need to be proposed and processed. If you think merging something improves the encyclopedia, you can be bold and perform the merger, as described below. Because of this, it makes little sense to object to a merger purely on procedural grounds, e.g. "you cannot do that without discussion" is not a good argument.

Duoduoduo (talk) 22:22, 20 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]

That is not a merge. That is a cut-and-paste move of the disambiguation page to the base name. Please do not do that; use WP:RM to verify consensus, and then an admin will move the dab (and its history) to the base name. As I said above. -- JHunterJ (talk) 11:38, 21 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Nope, I wasn't going to do a cut-and-paste; I was going to follow the instructions for a merge. In any event, I've proposed the move on Talk:West Indies (disambiguation). Duoduoduo (talk) 17:29, 21 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for proposing the move. For clarity for anyone else reading though: you can only follow the instructions for a merge if you're merging the contents of two pages. Moving the contents of one page to another (as in "The content will be identical to the current content at West Indies (disambiguation), and the title will be West Indies") is not a merge, but a cut-and-paste move, unless you use the Wikipedia move function. -- JHunterJ (talk) 18:43, 21 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]
