Hi all[edit]

I've started up this page as this is a specific area of my research, and the Internet censorship in the United Kingdom page is getting rather large. I plan to move in some information from the Open Rights group wiki and generally provide a technologically accurate resource on these filters Deku-shrub (talk) 22:58, 6 April 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Great idea![edit]

I've been wondering for some time how to reduce the size of Internet censorship in the United Kingdom and this should help. Do you think we can remove the big table of blocked categories from Internet censorship in the United Kingdom now that it's here? I've changed this article's title slightly to conform to Wikipedia standards (from a "UK" prefix to an "in the United Kingdom" suffix. Do you think we ought to also replace "web" with "Internet" in the title as it's less ambiguous? Polly Tunnel (talk) 17:23, 7 April 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Yes, I think after this page is expanded a little, simply the list of typically blocked categories will remain on the main page, with the expanded detail living here.
Whilst you might think "internet" blocking would be more accurate, actually all the programmes contained are literally web only (DNS, Http, https). The only exception I know to this is some of the games blocking that blocks Steam (BT I think) - yet irc, vpns, Tor, ftp, p2p are not blocked. I think I need to research this specific point further - exactly the sort of reason why I created this page Deku-shrub (talk) 19:41, 7 April 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Version 1 is done![edit]

As of today I've finished version 1 of this page, that was a lot of work! I'm proud of the coverage table that compares and contrasts the various programmes in effect.

As I mentioned on Internet censorship in the United Kingdom, that page is including a lot of content from this page, that page needs slimming down. But this page can now get added to! Deku-shrub (talk) 22:52, 16 April 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Digital Economy Act[edit]

I've moved this back to "Internet censorship in the United Kingdom". Sections 17 & 18 of the act (those that would have allowed web blocking) were repealed without ever coming into effect. The other provisions of the act (suing file downloaders and restricting their internet access speed or disconnecting them) do not amount to web blocking. Hence the act's relevance to this article seems to me marginal at best. Polly Tunnel (talk) 13:17, 14 September 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Agreed but it deserves a mention in a historical context, will add it back in that form later Deku-shrub (talk) 12:39, 15 September 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Obstruction of business[edit]

A little-known fact is the illegal obstruction of business of rightfully operating companies outside of Britain. Blocking business websites of EU companies is an infringement of EU commercial laws through an illegal trade barrier. Especially BT and Virgin are excelling at this, excluding Non-British operated websites of companies from the EU which does not seem to be "collateral damage" of the British blocking policy but a protectionist move. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 2003:45:490F:DC0E:B850:4C80:5DCB:B1BD (talk) 10:26, 5 January 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Can you link any details of the relevant legislation? Deku-shrub (talk) 12:06, 5 January 2015 (UTC)[reply]
