African descent?[edit]

The reference given makes no mention of this. Where in Africa? 82.36.94.228 (talk) 20:39, 12 May 2009 (UTC) My understanding is that he is of Jamaican descent. Until the claim that he is African can be verified, I think that it should be omitted.82.36.94.228 (talk) 07:51, 16 June 2009 (UTC)[reply]

  • He's black. This is clear from his photo at Allmusic. To be "of African descent" one does not need to be directly from Africa. Is he's black, his ancestors were Africans, even is he himself came to UK from Jamaica. Netrat (talk) 15:36, 31 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]
    • And BTW, are you sure you are not talking about Wayne Marshall (deejay)? Netrat (talk) 15:38, 31 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]
      • I do not believe we categorise people in this way in the UK. If we listed all people by their origins six seven or eight generations back, the results would be ridiculous. He was born in England, and is therefore English. One of his parents was of Caribbean, not African, origin I believe. But until any citation can support the statement that he is of 'African' descent, there is no need to mention the fact. 82.36.94.228 (talk) 21:23, 10 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]
        • Then why do Black British article and Category:Black British people category exist? BTW his photos are reliable source. Netrat (talk) 22:16, 10 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]
          • He may be 'black' but that does not mean one should presume 'African' descent unless it is clearly stated somewhere. I am rather certain that his family is of Caribbean background. That is not Africa.82.36.94.228 (talk) 15:39, 14 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]
            • Then let's write "Black British" instead of "of African descent". Netrat (talk) 09:58, 18 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]
              • Why? Why? What relevance has his skin colour got to anything? Should we, for example, talk of Peter Donohue as a Balding Red-haired British pianist? 82.36.88.163 (talk) 07:39, 24 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]
