need or no need for disambiguation page[edit]

NONE of the items in the dab page appear to be called "water monitor" ever. Not a single line in the dab page indicates that an item is also known as "water monitor". None of the corresponding articles indicate such, either. There needs to be some indication, with justification, somewhere, that there is any usage of water monitor term, or else this disambiguation page should be deleted. Actually, the Asian water monitor is most commonly referred to as simply the "water monitor", and its article originally occupied this page. WolfmanSF (talk) 17:03, 12 September 2015 (UTC)[reply]
  • Ping Plantdrew and JMK who edited this and/or associated articles recently. Thank you Wolfman. I see that the page now at Asian WM was edited by search and replace apparently to remove every instance of simple "water monitor" and replace by "Asian water monitor", at time of move of "water monitor" to "Asian water monitor". I think I want to object to that name-switching edit pretty strongly as extreme and insensitive. It rather makes a mockery of previous history of article, of DYK about it, developed by a number of contributing editors. There was no attempt to document the usage of the new term and non-usage of the old term AFAIK. There was no indication in the revised lede that "water monitor" ever was or could be used to refer to the topic monitor, when the existence of the article suggests that it does at least sometimes mean it. (Also by the way, the move created a number of "dablinks" (links to disambiguation pages) which were not revised. I arrived as a participant in wp:DPL to disambiguate inbound links. And as i recall, I found several usages of "Malayan water monitor" and I want to edit the lede to reflect that, but will look for some documenting source(s) first.) I have just reverted the name-switching edit as extreme, and ask for discussion here. Further I just redirected this "water monitor" topic to the "Asian water monitor" page to restore sense to the previous DYK and other links from User and Talk pages, and to put things back to the previous status quo as far as possible. As in the "R" in wp:BRD cycle.
  • The "Asian water monitor" page is now the only page asserting usage of "water monitor" as an alternative or primary name. Given some apparent disagreement (including at least one IP editor in edit history of water monitor), I call for documentation of any alternative names at the articles that appeared in the temporary dab:
  • "Water monitor"'s alternate names "Asian water monitor" and "Malayan water monitor"
  • Nile monitor dab-implied alternate name "water monitor"
  • Deluge gun, large firefighting devices dab-implied to have alternate name "water monitor" (reflecting "for" hatnote in previous Water monitor page)
There's no need to document alternative names for the two items in "See also" section of temporary dab ( Mertens' water monitor and Mitchell's water monitor ) as they were not asserted to be commonly termed "water monitor".

Not trying to prove any point with the edits. The problem is rather that the Nile monitor, like the Asian water monitor, is certainly also known as "water monitor", and perhaps mainly so, as you may see in Elsevier's Dictionary of Reptiles, p. 518[1], and here [2], [3], [4], [5], [6], [7], [8], [9], [10], [11], [12], [13], [14], [15], [16], [17], [http://www.amazon.com/Artwork-monitor-Varanus-niloticus-National/dp/B00HUDAGGI], [18], etc., and the internet doesn't adequately reflect the extent to which it is used. So why must one land on the Asian water monitor page when you seek "water monitor"? Is one monitor more important than the other? I'm still happy with the move and no vested interest was involved. The African elephant is called "elephant" in my part of the world, but that doesn't mean that a wikipedia search for "elephant" must land on that page. Likewise I think that "water monitor" need not be used on either the Nile or Asian water monitor pages, but can be limited to the disambiguation page.
