Date[edit]

The date on the grave plate is MCXXV (= 1125) and not MCXXXV, see this photo--Claude J (talk) 06:33, 20 July 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for the comment. Nothaft's discussion in his edition of Walcher's text (see n. 10) states that the lettering on the grave plate is a restoration; historical documents discussed by Nothaft (as I mentioned briefly in note 10) state that the original version as found had the date 1135. To quote Nothaft (pp. 10-11):

"the inscription may seem unambiguous in putting down the year 1125, but the records of eighteenth and nineteenth century antiquaries show that the date on the slab once used to be MCXXXV. It appears that the change was only made when the lettering was restored at some point between 1885 and 1914."

In a footnote, Nothaft cites some of these sources and refers to correspondence from the local historian Brian Smith to Charles Burnett providing further details. This evidence confirms that 1135 was originally inscribed on the slab as the date of Walcher's death. --SteveMcCluskey (talk) 02:53, 20 August 2018 (UTC)[reply]
