Extensive changes made[edit]

I have made extensive changes to try and improve tone and to add new citations. A substantial section on the early history of coverage in travel writing and tourist promotion had been flagged with a maintenance tag since 2012 as possibly representing original research. The content of the section was out of date, seems of limited current interest, and all the reference links are dead. I removed the entire section.
