Anyone know any more about the channel switch? I was listening to the station when it happened (September 2004), but I cannot remember any details like date and time. --Anidnmeno 02:11, 3 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Fair use rationale for Image:WSFM-FM.png[edit]

Image:WSFM-FM.png is being used on this article. I notice the image page specifies that the image is being used under fair use but there is no explanation or rationale as to why its use in this Wikipedia article constitutes fair use. In addition to the boilerplate fair use template, you must also write out on the image description page a specific explanation or rationale for why using this image in each article is consistent with fair use.

Please go to the image description page and edit it to include a fair use rationale. Using one of the templates at Wikipedia:Fair use rationale guideline is an easy way to insure that your image is in compliance with Wikipedia policy, but remember that you must complete the template. Do not simply insert a blank template on an image page.

If there is other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified the fair use rationale on the other images used on this page. Note that any fair use images uploaded after 4 May, 2006, and lacking such an explanation will be deleted one week after they have been uploaded, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you.

Proposed merger[edit]

Most of the following has been copied from Talk:WAZO.

After December 31, 2010, WSFM (FM) will no longer exist. The speculation is that WUIN will move to the old WSFM frequency, and based on what I have been told, the history of the station should go with the call letters, not the frequency.

At one time, the history of WSFM and its predecessor WJYW were in the WAZO article because they were at 107.5. That would seem to make the most sense, because WAZO does not have a long history. We could just have two sections: one on the history of 107.5 (and 107.1 before that), and one on the history of 98.3 prior to 2011.Vchimpanzee · talk · contributions · 18:51, 9 December 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Well, this is weird. The owners of "The Penguin" seem to have let the call letters that would reflect that format get away. Right now the articles for WMYT (FM) and WSFM look weird. I have been told the history of the radio station goes with the call letters or at least the name, not the frequency. If the WUIN letters don't move here, I want to propose deleting all the history of The Penguin from the WMYT (FM) article and merging the text in the WSFM (FM) article, while all pre-2011 history of the 98.3 frequency goes to WAZO.Vchimpanzee · talk · contributions · 19:34, 6 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]

You know, come to think of it, if the WSFM letters don't change, what I'm proposing is exactly what SHOULDN'T be done. Another possibility is merging the pre-2011 content of WMYT (FM) here and having a section for The Penguin as well as one for the pre-2011 history of WSFM, even that from its 107.5 days. Naturally, the history on 107.1 would stay in WSFM (FM) as well.Vchimpanzee · talk · contributions · 20:01, 6 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Oppose: The history of the station stays with the license, even if the call sign or frequency change, although there are exceptions to this guiding principle. It would be better to write up the history of each station and where there's a call sign swap include a sentence along the lines of "In January 2011, the WARM call sign and all-polka programming moved from 98.6 FM to 104.2 FM in a swap with WHOT." with an explanation of why the swap took place and a link to the other article. Was it an ownership change? Were the station's already co-owned and they swapped the frequencies for some other reason (signal strength, coverage area, wanted excuse to print new bumperstickers) and can you give a cite for that reason? And you'll need a sentence or two guiding the reader to the other article at each article. (When station's crosslink their histories like this, the reader will have to read multiple articles one way or the other. This way the editing history and copyright concerns are addressed without undue confusion or a lot of re-writing every time some programming genius swaps formats.) - Dravecky (talk) 23:37, 10 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]
  • Oppose: What Dravecky said. - NeutralhomerTalk • 00:19, 11 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]
  • Oppose - Dravecky is exactly right. The article stays with the call letters/license, not the frequency, parent company or brand. That's long-established policy. If many of the old WYRD - Your Pagan Station! folks moved over to the new WYRM when WYRD was taken over by a Baptist church and rebranded God's WYRD - The 24-Hour Truth!, that's fine; mention it in both articles, but don't move WYRD over to the new station because the personnel and format moved over. --Orange Mike | Talk 17:34, 11 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]
  • Comment - I do agree with User:OrangeMike that the history doesn't go with the frequency. However, this is a case where the format and name are moving, and I haven't seen evidence they're going to move the call letters too. Someone parked the WUIN letters, which doesn't make a whole lot of sense to me. It is true there is a situation like WYRD's people moved to WYRM. I saw on a message board but not in a reliable source that the DJs from WSFM (FM) moved to WLGD and the new format is similar, but they didn't move the name. So WSFM (FM) no longer exists, except those are the call letters The Penguin is using. I didn't recommend putting the history of WSFM in WLGD. I just see it as strange that The Penguin's history will be split. On the other hand, this is not working in my favor: while fixing "What links here", I was reminded The Penguin was once on WODR as well.Vchimpanzee · talk · contributions · 18:54, 11 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]
"The Penguin" is a brand or format, an evanescent thing and not inherently notable. This is one reason we write our articles about the stations themselves, which are comparatively fixed and stable. --Orange Mike | Talk 20:21, 11 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]
So there's no purpose in keeping its entire history together?Vchimpanzee · talk · contributions · 21:29, 11 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Not really. Stations mess with formats all the time. --Orange Mike | Talk 17:04, 12 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]
I guess I should drop this then.Vchimpanzee · talk · contributions · 14:41, 13 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Wait, now we have new information. The call letters of WSFM have been changed to WUIN. In that case, we have a whole new situation to deal with. The new WUIN can be considered a continuation of the old one.Vchimpanzee · talk · contributions · 14:45, 13 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]

No, the situation remains as above. Each radio station has its own history and there's no reason to merge them into one tangled article. - Dravecky (talk) 21:41, 13 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Unlike the tangled articles we have now.Vchimpanzee · talk · contributions · 19:04, 14 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]
