Article Move[edit]

I propose to move this article to WEXP-AM, which currently redirects to this page anyway. It is shorter, and more accurate in my opinion. Does anyone have a problem with that? The only thing is...I think I need an admin to move it because WEXP-AM already exists. Lasallefan 14:09, 11 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I don't think that's the right thing to do. According to Wikipedia:WikiProject Radio Stations#Stations with call signs, you'd want to use "WEXP (AM)" instead of "WEXP-AM". I don't think that's appropriate anyway, as that naming convention is for government-issued call signs. As WEXP is not an FCC-licensed station, I don't think it should be listed in a way that is ambiguous with a licensed station. -- Mikeblas 23:58, 14 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Incorrect call letters?[edit]

WEXP are the call letters for a station in Brandon, near Rutland, Vermont. [1] WEXP in the FCC FM station database. Why does this unlicensed station claim those call letters? -- Mikeblas 13:23, 27 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

We are a college radio station in Philadelphia, PA which does not broadcast any farther than the boundaries of La Salle University. We claim those call letters because that FM radio station is so far removed from our AM radio station that we doubt anyone would confuse the two together. Also, according to [this page], the license was applied for in 2000. WEXP has been unofficially been using the call letters WEXP since well into the 70s.

Wikipedia is not a place to talk about the legality of issues. If you want to dispute why a radio station is using the call letters, take it up with the FCC. Pacdude 03:24, 31 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I'm not debating legality; I'm trying to figure out why this station (for which I can't find any licensing information) is using the page "WEXP", while the commercial and licensed station doesn't have a page at all. Isn't the licensed, high-power station more notable than the college station, which doesn't broadcast off-campus? -- Mikeblas 16:48, 1 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]
WEXP FM is in a smaller market, it hasn't been around nearly as long as the AM compatriot, and it no longer even promotes the "calls," although neither station is still using the slogan "Express" Radio. WEXP Fm's just another classic rock station. If someone really wants to make a WEXP FM page, so be it, but I'm not volunteering. Delinodeshields 20:19, 1 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Playing Devil's Advocate, couldn't I argue that the 30+ year old unlicensed college station in one of America's largest cities is more notable than the radio station in Vermont who registered for their call letters last year? Just saying. 68.80.40.229 04:52, 2 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

The La Salle station can claim squatter's rights to the callsign, then? While WEXP might be "just another classic rock station", the La Salle station is just another college station -- and the Vermont WEXP station is actually registered with the FCC. It seems a curious situation to me, that an unlicensed station would use a callsign without it being assigned. -- Mikeblas 05:09, 2 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

This argument is pointless...IF someone creates a "WEXP" page for the vermont station then the page "WEXP" will just become a page that directs to either "WEXP (La Salle)" or "WEXP (Vermont)"...or titles of that nature. Indeed, it seems like you've got many other things to sort out with respect to this article. Someone's renamed it appropriately and created a disambiguation page, but unfortunately that left about three-dozen links to the disambiguation page. Notability and memories[edit]

This radio station provided and still provides all of my greatest memories of our college years. WEXP has featured live interviews with comedian Dane Cook, Rockapella from Where in the World is Carmen Sandiego, Lita and some of the other characters from WWF... Can anyone remember any other notable celebrity appearances over the years? Also, in my days as a DJ my favorite broadcast was the time we were given to go on the air to give away plane tickets and the football tickets for that '03 Sugar Bowl game to some students. Granted it's perhaps not encylopedic because it was a one time promotion, but that parternship with Nokia helped us celebrate WEXP's first foray into online radio back in Fall 2002. WEXP's unlike an opportunity a lot of college DJ's get and I could exempify the reasons but I'm getting longwinded. I'm also impressed with the widely(?) acclaimed sports coverage, to the extent that it's filled a huge void, particularly giving me and all the other fans of these otherwise hidden sports teams something to cherish. (La Salle has a basketball team?) Because fans of the soccer and baseball teams are from all over the United States, and WEXP is the only signal that carries them, this extensive coverage should not be taken for granted by anyone. on air, or not?[edit]

This article appears to contradict itself. It says in the opening sentence that the station "airs on 1600AM", but at the end of the first section, it says that the station hasn't been transmitting on any frequency since 2003. Which is correct? The carrier current broadcast is a bit confusing; was this interrupted in 2003, as well, or has it been continuous? -- Mikeblas 18:45, 10 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

As of, like, this very second, WEXP is not on 1600AM. The antenna is still being installed and should be finished any day now, but no one has come out and given an exact date of completion. The carrier current has been continuous from what I understand and still broadcasts to the North Dorms on 530 AM. Pacdude 19:16, 10 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Actually, I find it even more confusing. "Planned to still take place" means what, exactly? That it was not interrupted, and the station really is on the air (in contradiction to the opening paragraph)? Or that it will not be interrupted? "Currently" is pretty temporal, and not exactly good wording for an encyclopedia article. "In August, 2006" would be more appropriate (if that's what "currently" means). -- Mikeblas 16:15, 11 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Archived Page[edit]

I tried to archive the page, but Mikeblas had a problem with it, so I put it back. I just wanted to make thing nicer and neater without deleting things. Shows what I know. Pacdude 05:33, 13 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

The reasons Pacdude provided were that the article was "too long". Only 16K of material was archived. Much material was deleted and not archived without explanation. (Indeed, even after this restoration, there's missing material.) I know that talk pages are sometimes archived, but what Pacdude did seems rather arbitrary, particularly since it invovled archiving active conversations. My other "problems with it", also obliterated by Pacdude, can be found in the history of this page here [3].
I think, between Lasallefan and Pacdude, there are some [Wikipedia:Ownership of articles|ownership]] issues going on with this article -- and even the discussion page. If they can't be worked out, specifically including the frequent revertions that happen in this article, perahps we should invite a third party opinion. -- Mikeblas 06:12, 13 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]
No, there aren't any ownership problems (and you missed a bracket which I won't fix because it's your comment). I don't claim to own it. I'm trying to do what I, as a new Wikipedia user, think is right. If I am mistaken, then sorry. I will fix my mistakes and go on with my editings. Sorry that I messed up the talk page, Mike. I had activated my account a year ago, but haven't done any real editings until the past couple months or so. Everything previous to that has been like fixing typos. But feel free to edit whatever the problems are. I would love to help, but I keep getting reverted, so I don't bother anymore. Feel free to correct anything! The big problem with the radio station is that, for the most part, there are no online sources except for the WEXP website, which is devoid of history. A lot of history can be found in old issues of the La Salle Collegian, but that involves trekking to La Salle and finding old issues. Really, the only verifiable sources that anyone can check is the stuff about the awards that Bagni won. I mean, what I know about the station, I've been told from previous DJs, but that's considered original research and I can't include it. Pacdude 00:42, 16 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Fair use rationale for Image:Wexp.gif[edit]

Image:Wexp.gif is being used on this article.
