Is album comprised only of previously released material? Or (only?) alternate takes? Or (only?) "rough" / "unedited" mixes of previously released material?[edit]

A Wikipedia editor recently added the statement that this album's,

"...tracks were previously released on the 1967 Thad Jones / Mel Lewis Orchestra album Live at the Village Vanguard."

If this is correct, I would suggest merging the information in this article into the previous / original Live at the Village Vanguard album article. i.e. "this" ...Live Sessions 3 album is not "notable" on its own if it is simply a re-issue of previously released material.

Scott Yanow also mentions in an Allmusic.com review that "...Although the back cover states that those [Thad Jones / Mel Lewis Orchestra] performances are from November 15-17, 1970, they are actually from April 28, 1967." Which is the recording date (month) for the previous album.

So, is this ...Live Sessions 3 release "just" a re-issue of previously released material? Is it a release of an "unedited rough mix" of exactly the same material or is it (possibly) a release of alternate takes of the same songs recorded at (approximately) the same time - but not EXACTLY the same time? The track times differ - sometimes dramatically - between the two releases.

At the risk of relying on a bit of "original research" for confirmation, I was able to listen to a copy of Village Vanguard Live Sessions 3 today and can confirm Scott Yanow's comments in his Allmusic review (above). i.e. that these tracks were NOT recorded in 1970 but are indeed from the same 1967 live performance as (and are, for the most part, identical to the tracks from) Live at the Village Vanguard (The Thad Jones / Mel Lewis Orchestra album). I have made adjustments to the Thad Jones / Mel Lewis Orchestra discography and related wiki links as appropriate. Pugetbill (talk) 09:42, 29 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]
