This article should adhere to the gender identity guideline because it contains material about one or more trans women. Precedence should be given to self-designation as reported in the most up-to-date reliable sources, anywhere in article space, even when it doesn't match what's most common in reliable sources. Any person whose gender might be questioned should be referred to by the pronouns, possessive adjectives, and gendered nouns (for example "man/woman", "waiter/waitress", "chairman/chairwoman") that reflect that person's latest expressed gender self-identification. Some people go by singular they pronouns, which are acceptable for use in articles. This applies in references to any phase of that person's life, unless the subject has indicated a preference otherwise. Former, pre-transition names may only be included if the person was notable while using the name; outside of the main biographical article, such names should only appear once, in a footnote or parentheses.

LGBT Puerto Ricans[edit]

I have included Venus Extravaganza in the Category:LGBT Puerto Ricans because of her association to the House of Extravaganza (which is predominantly Puerto Rican) and because many people mistakenly believe Venus is Puerto Rican. Scholarly sources identify Venus Xtravaganza's Puerto Rican background, for example, Darren Lenard Hutchinson's article "Out Yet Unseen: A Racial Critique of Gay and Lesbian Legal Theory and Political Discourse" published in the Connecticut Law Review 29.2 (1997): 561-645. A question of ‘Legacy’[edit]

The House of Xtravaganza remains active within the ball circuit, night life, and LGBTQ activism. It is one of the longest continually-active groups of New York's drag scene.

I don't mean any offense by this, but how is is the House of Xtravaganza continued existence directly attributable to Venus such that it could be considered part her specific legacy more than anyone else's in the house's history? The Venus Xtravaganza Legends Award[edit]

I just added the new entry in the Legacy section for the Venus Xtravaganza Legends Award. This is my first time editing/contributing to a wikipedia page so please let me know if I did it incorrectly; I'll be happy to modify as needed. I would like to find more references to other recipients of the award, as well as any other details that anyone can provide. My limited research has been unfruitful, unfortunately. Venus' Birth Name[edit]

It is very clear in the Wikipedia Style guidelines that the birth name for transgender individuals should ONLY be included if they were notable under the birth name. Whether it's in the lead or body, we should be respectful of the individual's wishes to use their changed name.

According to the Transgender FAQ guideline on GLAAD: "For some transgender people, being associated with their birth name is a tremendous source of anxiety, or it is simply a part of their life they wish to leave behind. Respect the name a transgender person is currently using. If you happen to know a transgender person's birth name (the name given to them when they were born, but which they no longer use), don't share it without that person's explicit permission. Sharing a transgender person's birth name and/or photos of a transgender person before their transition is an invasion of privacy, unless they have given you permission to do so."

Please be respectful of Venus' choice. Even though she is no longer with us, we should respect her decision to change her name as a transgender woman.

@Shoobadoop: Please comply with [[WP:BRD. Once your change has been reverted you should discuss it on the talk page and the article should remain "as was" before the changes were made You should not change back to what you think the article should say and then discuss. Please revert your last change until this is resolved.

MOS:DEADNAME refers to the lead of the article lead not the body of text.

@John B123: I'm not going to undo my change based on principal; I do not support the act of deadnaming transgender people.

After digging into the subject further, it appears there is an RfC currently being proposed by the WP:LGBT to change the MOS:Deadname policy. I will watch this RfC closely. @John B123: If you find that insulting then why do you insist on deadnaming her? The act of deadnaming is insulting and disrespectful to the person being deadnamed! I refer you back to the GLAAD FAQ linked previously, and the RfC by the LGBT community to have this policy changed for cases like hers. It is disrespectful to her memory.
