name

I Love Vampire Weekend!! Someone removed a question I put here about their name. I thought there name was a play on the fact that they are white New Yorkers playing South African rock. So the "vampire" is a nod to them being parasitic and the "weekend" had to do with them being dilettantes, like the phrase "weekend warrior". I went to the wiki page to verify this origin, and it mentioned that they are actually named after a movie they made. However, I don't see any citation for that claim, so I'm just wondering if people are sure it has to do with the movie, and not a sly wink to their positioning as white artists playing African music, in the same vein as calling their music "Upper West Side Soweto". —Preceding unsigned comment added by 140.163.254.157 (talk) 21:37, 17 March 2008 (UTC)

the genre "trustfundia"

africans

Right, so these guys aren't playing Afro-Pop. They're playing music influenced by Afro-Pop. It's not Afro-Pop. The Police weren't a reggae band, right? And The Beatles weren't R&B. Musical genre is not determined by race. Bob Marley wouldn't suddenly not be Reggae if he was white (He's bi-racial anyhow.) Jimi Hendirx was a black guy in a mainly white genre, but that doesn't mean he's not 'Rock' because his skin color does not match the majority of the people who play the genre. And The Police weren't Reggae because they sonically weren't, ditto with The Beatles and R&B. The Rolling Stones, however, did do some R&B, and the infobox states accordingly. I don't get why the criticism of 'shop lifting afropop' was removed a while back, and i'm assumign this discussion is tied to that.... "Whitest band" and "Trust Fund Frat rock"

These are non-notable critiques of the band and I propose they are not included here per wp:note. They do not add quality to the article.

  • An alternative description of their sound - "trust fund frat rock" - was given by fellow musician Nicholas Thorburn [1]
  • In 2008, Vampire Weekend were dubbed the "whitest band" by Salon writer Christian Lander.[2]

I think should go back. If you are going to keep the chessey "Soweto" description, you should have how their contemporaries interprete the vampire weekend sound. Thornburn is thier musical peer, and the Lander is a music journalist.

I personally find the "whitest band" monicker to be hilarious, but I agree that it does not belong here. The reference is taken out of context and Christian Lander explains what he means more in depth in the actual interview.
