Bates History of Erie[edit]

Samuel P Bates, History of Erie, Part I, Chapter XVIII covers the War of 1812 and Perry in considerable detail, including the activities of Daniel Dobbins and the Ohio. The section "The First Cruise" on pp 303-04 suggests that the Ohio lacked manpower to set sail and was left behind on 6 August 1813, along with the Tripp, when Perry left for a one-day reconnaissance sail. The Ohio was able to join Perry's fleet of nine vessels on 12 August 1813 for a sail to Sandusky and the Detroit river seeking the British. The section "Challenging to Fight" on pg 304 said the fleet anchored off Sandusky on 17 August 1813 and later attempted to draw out the British from the Detroit river. I've not read it all, but there is surely more detail about Dobbins and the Ohio in this chapter, in case anyone wishes to write some naval history. I would hope someone would also create an article on Dobbins. Pat 19:07, 6 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]
