Current taxonomy is at odds with phylogeny of Echinopsis/Trichocereus

The current name of the article (Trichocereus macrogonus var. pachanoi) reflects the currently accepted name for San Pedro.

However, the change from Echinopsis pachanoi to Trichocereus macrogonus var. pachanoi is based on a paper (Albesiano, 2012) in which the author reclassified Echinopsis pachanoi as a variety of Trichocereus macrogonus according to their morphology and without considering their phylogeny (https://doi.org/10.2985/026.018.0114), and also because he favours the idea of putting all Echinopsis spp. within the genus Trichocereus.

The most recent phylogenetic reconstruction of the relationship among Trichocereus and Echinopsis species (Schlumpberger & Renner, 2012 https://doi.org/10.3732/ajb.1100288) clearly demonstrates that Echinopsis (Trichocereus) pachanoi is a standalone species and not a variety of Trichocereus macrogonus.

Therefore I propose changing the name of the article back to Echinopsis pachanoi. This change would also make page navigation easier, since the query "Echinopsis pachanoi" on Wikipedia often directs the reader to the Trichocereus macrogonus article instead of this article. 5.90.47.144 (talk) 00:03, 10 October 2023 (UTC)
