Unexplained deletions

I have restored two external links that were deleted without explanation. It is best to explain deletions in the edit summary or here.—Theo (Talk) 22:04, 17 Jun 2005 (UTC)

Flagged for cleanup

An anonymous editor has made some useful additions with unusual spelling and grammar. I lack the time to fix this now. Could some helpful gnome have a go?—Theo (Talk) 07:57, 26 Jun 2005 (UTC)

I have flagged this for cleanup again. The article doesn't seem to be entirely certain if it is for the TV show or televesion series, there is very little explanation of the show before the huge table of characters, and things just seem generally cluttered. Clairvoyance

I've just removed this from the article:

" In 2007, a semi-sequel called Magic Railroad will be released directly to video/DVD (Engines Can Do It)."

It's changed release date and title, and aside from the uncertainty, it lacks a source, and looks two years into the future. --Mel Etitis ([[User talk:Mel Etitis|Μελ I can tell you something right now! And well, it turns out that three years after the release date mentioned and there has been no Thomas film with that title released after all. This is obvious especially since the deletion discussion states that a character from TUGS was listed in the article. trainfan01

Song Lyrics

Someone has entered the lyrics for a number of songs but little else. To no avail, I asked that editor to tidy things up. So I have followed copyright violation procedure. I didn't want to meddle with the back links, but I thought editors of this page might want to delink the following pages. --William Pietri 23:05, 16 November 2005 (UTC)

Songs List

The songs "That's what friends are for" and "Rules and Regulations" are for the Series 4 category, as that is when they were realeased, but only on a cassette. They have not had videos made for them. -- Skarloey 13:16, 17 January 2006.

Conciseness and irrelevance

I have noticed a tendency for this article to wind up consisting almost entirely of lists while not containing very much useful information. These lists tend to simply just be a lot of names, with no explanation as to who they are, what they do, their history or anything. There isn't even consistency of presentation.

There is slightly more information for the locomotives of the NWR (whatever that is), but it's frankly dull technical facts. I would suggest that someone who comes on to this page hoping to find out about, say, Edward would not care that he's a 4-4-0 Larger Seagull, but they might want to know what his character is actually like. I think technical information should be put on the characters' own pages, so that if anyone wants to find out more, they can go there instead of having to wade through a load of information that means nothing to them.

I agree wholeheartedly with this. In my mind, rather than listing on this page, it would be more appropriate for characters to be listed and described on separate pages.

I've been putting considerable time and effort into the Railway engines (Thomas the Tank Engine and Friends) article recently. So rather than listing or even describing the railway characters on this page, link to the Railway Engines page. The same could be done for non-rail characters. Gonzerelli 15:15, 26 January 2006 (UTC)

The NWR stands for 'North Western Railway', or the 'true' railway TTTE and Friends work for. NW was on the toy Rev. Awdry gave to Christopher at Christmas. F3CNW 8:40 9 March 2007 (UTC)

merge proposal

There are a huge number of articles now on characters who have appeared in one or two episodes only. I feel they would be better merged into just a few articles. Feel free to suggest better names for the merged articles. Which article belongs where should be obvious from the main article. I have not marked any of the proposed articles as there are probably about 50 of them!

I don't think anything else merits an entry beyond an list item. Even many that would fit in the above categories don't need anything more. Thryduulf 23:45, 1 November 2005 (UTC)

On the lists: What do the * signify next to some names? I see no explanation.
I see the fat controller. Does the thin controller not appear in the series?

—Preceding unsigned comment added by 57.66.51.165 (talkcontribs)
The * indicates that the character is from the film only, not the TV series. It did say that somewhere. There is no "thin controller", only a fat one. Thryduulf 22:27, 3 November 2005 (UTC)

Mergr proposal sounds good. If there's enough material to support a decent sized article, leave it be, but merge the rest into the lists proposed. I think you could get away woth merging the last two suggestions into a combined list, something like Non-railway/locomotive vehicles. Saberwyn 03:46, 4 November 2005 (UTC)

  • Good idea, I've made the change above. Thryduulf 18:31, 4 November 2005 (UTC)

engines vs. locomotives

Personally I think the way forward is to do a similar thing to the List of Discworld characters articles. Major characters (for example Rincewind, The Luggage) have their own articles, linked from the list. The rest are listed in Minor Discworld characters.

Assuming this was done I would query the particlar choice of name for the article. The use of the term "engine" is depracated in favour of "locomotive". A steam locomotive such as Thomas has two "engines" - each piston and associated valve gear which drives the wheels is an "engine" in its own right. A diesel locomotive contains one or more diesel engines which power the locomotive. Daisy the Diesel Rail-Car for example has two "engines" but is not a locomotive but a multiple unit.

There is also the fact that some characters appear only in The Railway Series, the original books by Rev. W Awdry, some appear only in Thomas the Tank Engine and Friends, the TV Series. Some, but not all, appear in both.

I think any article of this type would need to use the term "characters" because some characters are coaches, trucks, road vehicles, and even people and animals.

Anyone wishing to browse a list of those characters which are locomotives could use Category:Fictional locomotives.

Merge article name

I posted this on User_talk:Thryduulf but I now see he invited replies here. On some (quite a few?) TTE-related articles you have put a tag to merge into a new article "Railway engines (Thomas the Tank Engine and Friends)". There is a problem. Your title really rather strongly implies the TV series but many of these characters also appear in The Railway Series. The authors of that article seem to have been very careful to list only the characters that appear in the books, not the extras brought in for TV. I suspect the book readers might not like your proposed article title though I expect an acceptable title could be found, maybe a rediect would help. Each character would probably need to be designated according to its provenance (this ought to be case now but it has often been done incorrectly). I've commented to you here because otherwise the discussion would be very distributed! Thincat 14:11, 18 November 2005 (UTC)

I think the problem is there is no ideal title - (The Railway Series) restricts it to the books. I'm not set on the titles I suggested, they were just the best that I coudl come up with - if you can improve on them by all means please do so! Thryduulf 15:31, 18 November 2005 (UTC)
The TV Series has gone in a different direction to the Railway Series. For example, the Awdrys would never have thought of Henry as the tree-loving engine he is in the TV Series. As such, the two should really be kept separate.

I have spent considerable time organising the Railway Engines page (a process which is continuing). You will notice that Railway Series characters have been removed, and character profiles standardised. In my mind, a separate article should be created for Railway Series characters. Gonzerelli 08:21, 27 January 2006 (UTC)

Cleanup

Since I last looked at it, the article has drifted off into a bit of a mess again. The English, formatting, and general style need a good overhaul. I've done a (very) little, but much more remains to be done. --Mel Etitis (Μελ Ετητης) 10:54, 28 January 2006 (UTC)

Proposed merge

I think Duncan's Ghost should probably be included as a character in this article, any thoughts? -- Scott 19:01, 18 March 2006 (UTC)

"Duncan's Ghost" is not worthy of an article or section of any article. I won't go so far as to delete the original page, but there are dozens of characters more worthy of being on the main page than this 'nothing' character. Gonzerelli 11:31, 19 March 2006 (UTC)

Fake information

Though I'm not a member of Wikipedia, I think this needs to be brought to attention. Somebody has been putting false information into the Series 6-10 episode pages, such as adding fake episode titles and characters. They've even made up an entire episode and character list for Series 10, which has yet to premiere. Other people have also been posting fake information all over these pages; in some cases they even repost it as soon as it's been removed. Is there anything that can be done about this?

Sadly, there's not a lot we can do about it, except remove any such information as soon as we see it. There are a number of people dedicated to maintaining Thomas&Friends/RailwaySeries pages, who are quite knowledgeable, however if you see anything that you think is wrong, or can't possibly be right, feel free to contact one of us (myself included), and even delete it yourself (which we will check). Regards, Gonzerelli 12:17, 16 February 2006 (UTC)
Thanks. I've been keeping regular tabs on the guide so I can remove any false information that's being put up. There's one annoying issue that I think should be brought up; somebody keeps posting fake "US alternative titles" in the Series 7-9 episode guides (such as "Skarloey to the Rescue" for "Skarloey the Brave"). This has been going on for a while now, and though I clear out any such information if I get wind of it, the same person usually comes back and reposts it. It's really starting to get on my nerves, and I'm sure there are others who feel the same way.

I've started to delete fake information(such as fake engines), but my changes were reverted back to the false information by a mod. Is there a way to make it so only mods familiar with this topic can make changes? TOP 05:11, 30 April 2006 (UTC)

I've noticed something that seems to be becoming a problem. Someone keeps leaving clumsily-written, badly-worded messages about Thomas appearing on Playhouse Disney. I'm pretty sure the information is false, but they keep doing it over and over again. I fear this may turn into a situation similar to the "Ten Cents and the Golden Tunnel" one currently taking place on the "Tugs" page. —The preceding unsigned comment was added by 195.93.21.103 (talkcontribs) .
Can you give an example of a page where this is happening. If editors add false information it will be removed, and in extreme cases the editor concerned can be blocked. Thanks, Gwernol 17:15, 6 July 2006 (UTC)
Sure. It mostly happens on the "Thomas on Television and in Film" section, though earlier today I saw it occur in the trivia section of the sub-article devoted to the Thomas songs. Here are specific links...
http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Thomas_the_Tank_Engine_and_Friends&direction=prev&oldid=62213919
http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Thomas_the_Tank_Engine_and_Friends&oldid=61111472
http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=List_of_Thomas_the_Tank_Engine_%26_Friends_Songs&oldid=62216791
(The first two are in the "Thomas on Television and in Film" section; the latter is somewhere in the trivia section)
Thanks, that's very useful. I've added the songs page to my watchlist and will keep an eye out. Unfortunately this seems to be coming from AOL IP addresses, which means its not much use to block the culprit (AOL reassigns IP addresses all the time, so if I block one IP it effects lots of other AOL users and probably doesn't stop the person making the edits). Best, Gwernol 19:52, 6 July 2006 (UTC)
That's good to hear. I'm afraid whoever is behind it was at again this morning, and they've been targetting the narrators section this time. I fear this is going to blow way out of proportion if it carries on.
And no matter what, I delete the info on Thomas & Shining Time Station appearing on Playhouse Disney, and the next second, it has been reverted by one of the vandal's 'little friends'. BigThomasFan 11:10, 28 August 2006

Official statement from WikiProject Thomas re. some vandalism

Recently, an unregistered user decided to vandalise this page, insulting the Sodor Island Forums (SIF) and its members, asserting that "[SIF] think they own this place".

While it is true that WikiProject Thomas originated at SIF, and core members of WikiProject Thomas are indeed regular members of SIF, by no means do we feel as though we have specific ownership of any page on Wikipedia. We very willingly welcome anyone who wishes to contribute constructively to any pages which fall under WikiProject Thomas' scope.

Having said that, however, superfluous edits, false edits, and edits which do not make a whole lot of sense, which have been made by unregistered users, will be reverted on sight. This is not asserting any kind of ownership on an article, this is maintaining an article's quality. There is a clear difference.

If you have any concerns, feel free to raise them on an article's talk page, or at Wikipedia Talk:WikiProject Thomas.

Gonzerelli 11:59, 16 July 2006 (UTC)

Hello, I find it particularly sad how well this article is maintained, and what great quality and standard it possesses, and yet it receives perhaps the most frequent amount of vandalism I have ever seen on a single article. You really do not deserve this... these vandals do not know when to stop, surely it must get boring for them, because there's always someone monitoring this page to revert damage, and it's nice to see a group of people so devoted to this particular subject. I think amongst yourselves you ought to organise some kind of vandalism block. Keep up the good work. Foxearth 09:06, 22 July 2006 (UTC)

Re-Dubs????

I heard a rumour that the studios are planning to redub seasons 1 and 2 with Michael Angelis' voice over Ringo Starr. Is this true? Jienum 19:11, 20 September 2006 (UTC)

Whether this is true or not, seasons 1 and 2 as they have been released and (initially) broadcast will be credited to Ringo Starr. If this redubbing happens, a brief referemce to it on the individual pages of both seasons will suffice. Gonzerelli 21:50, 19 September 2006 (UTC)

Season 11

I've noticed that, more than enough, Season 11 has been added to the list of Seasons. Whoever is doing this, I ask that you please stop until we receive an official confirmation from HIT Entertainment that one's being made and when it's being released. Wikipedia is not a crystal ball, and we need verifiable information. Thank you. Rusty5 12:32, 31 October 2006 (UTC)

Its a real shame that we have one or two persistent users who seem determined to add fan fiction and other nonsense like this to articles. I have blocked the latest account User:BenK for a month and will extend this to indefinite should he continue doing this with that account or any other. Gwernol 12:41, 31 October 2006 (UTC)

While I do hope that a Series 11 will materialise, we still don't have any proof. Yet, unregistered users continue to post that Season 11 will be coming in 2007. I've heard from a friend that HIT confirmed at least two more seasons after 2005's Series 9, and we have gained trust in the company with the promised return of Sir Handle in Series 10, but we can't verify this like we did with Season 10. At least wait until next year to write about Series 11, or before we create a page for it. None of us members of Wikiproject Thomas want to put up with the half-year of vandalism on the Season 10 page again. Thank you. Rusty5 22:19, 30 November 2006 (UTC)

News! I recently received official confirmation from HIT that more episodes will be made, and that "Thomas & Friends" won't end with Series 10. An 11th series will materialise, but they haven't told me if it will be in 2007, or in a couple years. Rusty5 02:06, 7 December 2006 (UTC)

Someone e-mailed HIT about a season 11. HIT has confirmed that there will be a season 11. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Jexerg (talkcontribs)

A PERSONAL E-MAIL IS NOT A RELIABLE SOURCE!!!!!!! Therefore, it CANNOT and WILL NOT be added until something concrete comes to light!
Gonzerelli 03:53, 21 January 2007 (UTC)

Not to be rude, but if it's from HIT Entertainment themselves, It'd most likely be reliable. Besides, how did we find out about Series 10? We had an article up for it around this time last year. They didn't even mention new episodes to the public until that press release, so how did we confirm Season 10 half a year earlier? I won't create an article for Season 11 yet, after all the vandalism we received with Season 10, but Thomas isn't the kind of series that spontaneously ends... Rusty5 17:28, 21 January 2007 (UTC)

Thomas and Autism

The National Autistic Society published a report a few years ago which detailed the 'special relationship' between many children with autism and Thomas the Tank Engine. You can read the report here and more information here (plenty more on Google too, if you search for "Thomas the Tank Engine" autism). Does anyone think this would be an appropriate/relevant topic for a new section within this article? Matt Eason 00:52, 27 December 2006 (UTC)

Strong Support. The article also includes a link to a PDF of the original report. This sort of coverage is EXACTLY what we need to support and expand articles in WP.
(Incidentally, these findings were also mentioned in the Radio Times in 2006. I have the snippets in my garage somewhere, so I'll need to add them as a supporting reference.)
EdJogg 09:26, 27 March 2007 (UTC)

Sources

I have gone through the "Series history" section and taken out some of the more egregious claims and added a number of "citation needed" tags. There are no sources for any of the material in the article, and per Wikipedia's policy on verifiability we need to add some. There is a danger that much of the article could be removed unless reliable sources are added soon. Gwernol 13:00, 9 April 2007 (UTC)

I have added references for Season 3, and re-written Season 4 to fit the references I have; but most of the seasons came out after The Thomas the Tank Engine Man was published and cannot be referenced from that book.

Sorry, but they're quite right. The song lyrics are the copyright of whoever wrote them, and reproducing them here, whether you listened and transcribed them or copied them from another webpage, is still a violation of that copyright. Since Wikipedia could face legal action from the copyright holder if the text remained here, the strict WP policies on copyright demand that the text is deleted 'immediately'. Afraid you won't win this one, and I can't think of an alternative approach that wouldn't breach a different copyright somewhere else. EdJogg 12:58, 25 June 2007 (UTC)

Bricked up in Tunnel

There is a local rumour that the engine (can't remember which one)which was bricked up in a tunnel, is based on Box Tunnel just to the east of Bath, (as rev Audrey lived in Box) but I can't find any mention of this on the Thomas pages or the tunnel page. Any thruth in this? Rod 16:35, 8 May 2006 (UTC)

I think this is a reference to the popular "strategic reserve" legend. Basically, the rumour was that when steam engines were being withdrawn from British Railways, a few were secretly kept back in case of nuclear war (steam engines wouldn't be affected by the electromagnetic pulse of an atomic bomb). One of the places suggested for this strategic reserve is Box Tunnel, bricked up on a secret siding within the tunnel. However, there's no strong evidence for this.

Tom

However there was a secret siding at Box tunnel, it wasn't to do with the mythical "strategic reserve". It in fact lead to Burlington, which was the government's now-decommissioned nuclear bunker located next to the tunnel in Corsham, Wiltshire. This was where the central government would move to in case of nuclear war. The idea was that the civil servants would move by train straight from London into the underground station in Burlington. With the coming of ICBMs and the four-minute warning in the 1970s it was obsolete, but wasn't decommissioned and taken off the secret list until the mid-1990s.BaseTurnComplete 11:25, 11 February 2007 (UTC)

I removed her from the trivia again. However, please do not revert that edit because I really can't find her in Season 9 or 10. I believed that Season 8 is her last appearance (to date). Correct me if I'm wrong. TobytheTramEngine 16:13, 17 October 2007 (UTC)
I've added her in a slightly different way -- this should avoid some of the reversions... Please revise if there are more Seasons where she does not appear. EdJogg 00:48, 8 November 2007 (UTC)
Oh, I see. Well, I didn't realize she returned in Season 11 until I saw the episode Toby's Triumph. TobytheTramEngine 19:49, 12 November 2007 (UTC)
Oops. I removed her because she didn't appear in Season 9 or 10. TobytheTramEngine 19:52, 12 November 2007 (UTC)
I will now restore that edit. TobytheTramEngine 18:54, 14 November 2007 (UTC)
I just did. If I did anymore mistakes, let me know. TobytheTramEngine 18:58, 14 November 2007 (UTC)

Narrators

A particular anon editor persists in re-arranging the 'Narrators' section, moving Ringo Starr and Pierce Brosnan to a section incorrectly titled 'Both versions'. Now, there are problems with this (see later) but I think this is an unhelpful arrangement. My arrangement is to show all the UK narrators in chronological order, followed by all the US narrators in chronological order (with the US entry for Brosnan being a very short duplication) -- see revision. The anon editor dislikes this arrangement (and has reverted it several times now) because he has stated that Ringo Starr narrated both UK and US versions, which I didn't think was the case. (For accuracy, the title of the combined section would need to be 'UK and U.S. versions', since 'Both versions' could mean almost anything.

Having looked at the anon editors talk page, he has been warned numerous times for instances of vandalism, adding incorrect information, etc, so I don't see much point in trying to induce a discussion with him.

Views from other contributors would be welcome.

PBS KIDS Sprout

I discovered that they are now starting to have 30 minute blocks of thomas and friends on saturday and sunday mornings at 8:00 A.M. Pacific time. However, I don't know if this has been going on for a while or if they just started recently. Each block consist of 4 episodes from seasons 1-7 as of what I know. I was wondering if we could create a Thomas and Friends on PBS KIDS Sprout page and include a episode guide for the 30 min blocks. This might be helpful to those that don't know when it's on and what to expect. One more thing, if we do create a guide, it wouldn't be a bad idea to write the season # and/or the narrator for each episode. If you have questions, please just type them on here and I will answer them ASAP. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 76.95.173.48 (talk) 03:21, 16 April 2008 (UTC)

Removed Trivia ('Behind the Scenes') section

The following section was removed in July 2008 as a 'trivia' section, which is deprecated at WP.

I have recovered the text to here (except for one, genuinely trivial paragraph) as some of the details are probably of relevance to the article, and need to be incorporated as prose. Having the text available to view here will assist editors in searching for references for the facts.

Behind the Scenes
  • Since 1984, the show has been filmed at West London's Shepperton Studios. The layouts are :expansive and fit in a hangar-sized room. The train miniatures are set on remote control and filmed using a 35 mm camera, in order to get quality shots from such small objects. [2]
  • Season 7 was the last season to use 35 mm film and the original Thomas the Tank Engine theme tune.
  • Mike O'Donnell and Junior Campbell composed the show's original main title theme, songs, and incidental music from the years 1984 to 2003 (Season 1 to Season 7 - 182 episodes). In 2004, Robert Hartshorne took their place as composer, while Ed Welch wrote the new theme tune and the songs.
  • Thomas the Tank Engine was in The Guinness Book of World Records 2004 as the world's largest model railway. The model of James for "Thomas and Friends Live" holds the record as the world's largest model engine.
  • Beginning with Season 12, production will be moved from Britain to Canada, and, in a revolutionary step, CGI animation will be used to actually allow the faces on the characters to move with their speech. However, in the background of the show, the characters will still have faces that don't move.

Locations

I think that there should be an article about the locations aorund the Island of Sodor. An article of this type does exist but it is not linked on the main Thomas and Friends page.

The link is Fictional locations in Thomas the Tank Engine and Friends

Subanthropomorphism

What is subanthropomorphism as compared to anthropomorphism? —The preceding unsigned comment was added by 209.98.224.153 (talk) 17:50, 21 January 2007 (UTC).

I'm guessing it has something to do with the only human-like parts of the engines are the faces and the common emotions. After all, they don't have arms and legs... Rusty5 23:19, 22 January 2007 (UTC)
I just Googled it, and the only hits are from this Wikipedia article and another article entitled "Anthropomorphism or sub-anthropomorphism? An anthropological approach to gods and robots." Unless someone can find a definition, it seems like this should be changed to "anthropomorphism." Sisina (talk) 03:26, 8 August 2008 (UTC)
Yeah, the link just goes to the Anthropomorphism article. Jezzamon (talk) 08:01, 27 April 2009 (UTC)
It does appear to be a made-up word or concept, so I have now removed the 'sub-'.
(See Talk:Anthropomorphism#sub-anthropomorphism for further details.)
EdJogg (talk) 16:03, 27 April 2009 (UTC)
Indeed. Reading the Britannica article (this site's article is very poor by comparison, as admitted in the Talk page you linked to) makes it clear that the term anthropomorphism applies equally to any object, creature, or phenomenon depicted as having any human quality. Thomas makes decisions and acts in a manner that would seem to go against what any sane driver and fireman would conceive of, therefore they are his own decisions and actions. Those decisions and actions are not animalistic, they are human. So even if they were depicted without faces (their only visibly human-like characteristic), they would still be anthropomorphic. While the term is from Greek anthropomorphos (anthropos "human being" + morphe "form"[3]), its meaning expanded very quickly to cover behaviour as well as shape.--Rfsmit (talk) 13:46, 3 June 2009 (UTC)

Delete this sentence

I feel we should delete this sentence:

"The use of a narrator removes the need to make characters' mouths move when they speak."

In my opinion, this sentence implies that if individual voices were used, the characters' mouths would have to move and that having a narrator removes this problem. But take for instance "TUGS"; all of the characters had specific, individual voices and a narrator. However, their mouths didn't move. This idea contradicts the basis of shows like "Bob the Builder" (in the case of the machines), Dig and Dug, and puppet shows in which the mouths of the puppets are just a line or a piece of yard or string. There are even individual voices in the Japanese versions of TTTE, and it's the British imaging.

In other words, this sentence presents a fact that the rules of most other television shows either contradict or don't apply. Perhaps, we could say something like this:

"The episodes are all written in a storybook style, rather than scripted drama material. Because of this format a narrator provides both the storytelling and the voices for the characters. Individual voices done by voice actors would make the story format seem choppy and disorganized."Ohyeh 14:46, 4 March 2007 (UTC)

Does the Japanese version "seem choppy and disorganized"?--Rfsmit (talk) 13:49, 3 June 2009 (UTC)

Video discussion

I miss having the video discussion. Can we please post up two new articles, one with the US releases and the other with UK releases? and this time, don't let anyone post up a bunch of bullshit! —Preceding unsigned comment added by 75.80.19.167 (talk) 02:09, 4 October 2007 (UTC)

Please see the discussions at Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Thomas and Friends video releases and Talk:Thomas and Friends video releases. A straight list of 'Thomas' DVDs and their contents does not add to the quality of Wikipedia, and the free-use images will not meet FUR guidelines. The page, as it was, contained no references that could be used to verify the information, and hence it was prone to 'fan-fiction' additions by so-called Thomas fans. (I presime that is what you meant by "bullshit".)
If you can adequately address the issues raised in the AfD discussion (see link above) then there is scope for you to create the page/s. If you cannot, then creating the article again may lead to its speedy deletion.
Please note that, before its 'deletion', the page was 'rescued' to the TrainSpotting World wiki. (Find page here) The rules at TSW are much less strict than here at WP, and you'll be able to do the UK/US split and enhance the article to your heart's delight!

Splish, Splash, Splosh! special

There's a new Thomas special coming out soon which hasn't been covered yet. It's called "Splish, Splash, Splosh!". Here's a trailer for it which someone uploaded on YouTube: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2e-SYNHhUkU --Victory93 (talk) 03:56, 8 November 2009 (UTC)

This has already invaded Thomas and Friends - Season 13. I have no idea of the accuracy of the information added, and I am starting to lose interest in trying to keep it to WP standards (not watching page at present due to number of spurious edits).
If it is yet another DVD special, like Hero of the Rails, it probably needs its own article, then Season 13 can be cleaned up again.

The original theme music?

Does anyone know if the complete original version of the theme music is available on CD at all? The full version is 2m45s long, and contains several sections which I don't think are ever used on the TV shows. Although it is highly likely to be made, season 15 has not been announced yet (unless you have a reliable source that can prove otherwise) so it is far too early to include any mention, which is pure speculation at present.

Den, Dart, Belle and Flynn

It said on the Thomas and Friends wikia that some new characters called Den, Dart, Belle and Flynn are appearing in the show. Den and Dart are confirmed to be appearing in Season 15 and both are voiced by Keith Wickham in the US and Uk versions. It's not said where Belle and Flynn are going to be featured though I'm sure Flynn is going to appear in the upcoming special Day of the Diesels cos' it said that a new engine is appearing in the special that would make Percy feel jealous, and I think that Belle is probably appearing in Season 16. Do you think we should add this information in? —Preceding unsigned comment added by SpecialEdward95 (talkcontribs) 07:44, 24 November 2010 (UTC)

No.
Most definitely not: this is no more than fan speculation. (See WP:THOMAS/FAQ)
Until this information is released officially -- and for Series 14 it was not available until broadcasts started -- it should not be included in Wikipedia. We need the information verified by a Reliable Source, such as certain news sites or HiT Entertainment themselves, or it just remains speculation. (Also see WP:CRYSTAL.)
There is no information about possible 15th or 16th series, so pages should not be created for these, nor 'facts' added, until officially announced.
Day of the Diesels has been stated by many fans as the name of the upcoming 'theatrical release', not least because that's what it says on the Thomas Wikia. However, that site has lower standards than here, and does not count as a Reliable Source. I have lost count of how many times I've had to remove such spurious information. When the title is announced, then we can add it here.
EdJogg (talk) 10:35, 24 November 2010 (UTC)

Not to start an argument, but that information was from Thomas and Friends Wikia and they've been never wrong about any upcoming event.... Heck They've even reported that there's going to be a new book of the Railway Series coming next year. For more information go on Thomas Wikia and look on Current Events on their main page and you'll find a bunch of useful information there. Again I'm not arguing with you but I think it will be alright if you just know that this is fact and not fake.

I will trust, and include, certain 'editorial' information from the Sodor Island Forums -- but not forum threads -- as this is carefully controlled and attributed. And I will use Thomas Wikia to check on facts added to Wikipedia -- this helps me decide whether the additions are complete rubbish, or are facts which don't yet have references to back them up. (The former are deleted immediately, the latter are handled on a case-by-case basis, but also likely to be deleted!)
HOWEVER the Thomas Wikia is open for editing by anyone (just like WP) BUT without the more stringent fact-checking required here. Hence it doesn't satisfy the criteria I mentioned above and I can't use it as a reference.
We have a reference for book 42 (possibly from SiF, can't remember) which is why it is mentioned within these pages.
EdJogg (talk) 15:10, 25 November 2010 (UTC)
Even though it's full of editorializing and unsourced theories, Thomas Wikia is still a decent directory of information (which I think is mostly gathered from SIF and HIT sites).
Day of the Diesels isn't the theatrical film, but the next in the series of DVD specials. A few tie-in books have popped up recently on Amazon, all linked in this blog entry: http://rollalongthomas.blogspot.com/2010/11/amazon-confirms-day-of-diesels-books.html The book summaries also reference the Flynn character first referenced in a list of 2011 Learning Curve merchandise (http://traincellar.com/subcat98.htm). Wikia is not a reliable source.trainfan01 talk 9:18, December 27, 2010 (UTC)

Fascinating. I have read the whole above section over and over. Everyone says that Wikia is not a reliable source. In many Wikia articles, there are Wikia references. So if a reference (i.e. Wikia) has its own references, is it not a reliable source? --Camphalfbloodseries (talk) 19:19 27 December 2010 UTC
Wikia has a DVD cover for Day of the Diesels at their Sodor Dieselworks page. Camphalfbloodseries (talk) 19:19 27 December 2010 UTC
The fundamental problems with Wikia as a Reliable Source are that anyone can edit it (it's a wiki) but there is no peer review to confirm accuracy, and the information sources used (forums, blogs, etc) are not acceptable as Wikipedia Reliable Sources. (The pages I looked at today gave no indication of the source of the information -- how do I know it isn't just all made up by fans?) That's not to say we can't use it to help research facts -- there's nothing wrong with using a programme title found in a blog as a search term to seek out better references, but we can't use Wikia directly.
Thank you for pointing out that ttte.wikia is being used as a reference, I will look to eradicate these from the article namespace.
EdJogg (talk) 10:58, 1 January 2011 (UTC)
Done -- all references to the Thomas Wikia in article space have now been replaced with more appropriate ones. (Remaining links are from talk pages, user pages, and archives.) Incidentally, during this process it became evident that the Railway Series information in the wikia pages is based heavily on the "Real Lives of Thomas the Tank Engine" site. -- EdJogg (talk) 22:10, 12 January 2011 (UTC)
Furthermore, the release date has been moved up one year. I suppose we must wait patiently in our chairs. Let the predictions end. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 71.190.0.248 (talk) 03:53, 8 January 2011 (UTC)

Two important announcements! 1- Day of the Diesels is in September 12 2011 on DVD. DOTD is straight-to-DVD. Stop denying it. There's trailers on youtube and you can tell someone filmed it off the television. We need a page. So much information to add. We can see that there's the Dieselworks (look like Steamworks, larger) and a diesel roundhouse with five berths. (Den Dart Green Class 08 diesel (to be named) Monobrow Red Diesel (to be named) and Diesel or Diesel 10) Also, there's a big open empty storage shed which looks red like a scrapyard. This is a disappointment to me- I can't believe that Diesel 10 isn't evil or is out to destroy steam engines for the sole purpose of getting the dieselworks fixed. HiT ought to keep the classic evil persona. Furthermore, 2- John Klausner's WW II film is in March 2012. There's no bloodshed and stuff. Recent sources (forgot which will post as soon as i find again) say that Thomas and Friends stay off the mainland because the people 'are fighting" but Diesel 10 is his old evil self here. This is (i think) called The Big Sodor War Lockdown and HiT's Thomas pilot movie. Again, WWII movie is uncertain but DOTD is 100% to exist soon. It already exists. It needs an article. Will write within three days if no objection/response/agreement. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 71.190.4.150 (talkcontribs) 03:33, 19 February 2011

  • "Stop denying it" -- is the sort of phrase that is not civil and is likely to count against your opinion being acknowledged.
  • "So much information to add" -- no there isn't. WP needs Reliable Sources and there is very little concrete evidence available. The only two reliable sources so far are:
    1. The HiT Entertainment Press Release about DotD.
    2. The Sodor Island blog -- and note that this information is mostly obtained from the press release anyway (Also, as this page is listed as a blog, it is likely to be rejected here.)
  • Yes, I agree that it is now time to formally create the Day of the Diesels page, but only because of the HiT Press Release (hence use this as a reference. No further information will be tolerated before the official release date, unless supported by suitable references (hence NOT the Thomas Wikia)).
  • Regarding the new movie -- all that you state above is your own speculation and hence should not be included in WP.

Constructive editing

I have been trying to address the issues on the page, but they seem to be continually being reverted by a number of editors who seem to accept no changes to this page. I'd like to address the following points:

  • Firstly, the future film is unproduced, and as such, may NEVER get made. Therefore, while the plans for the film can be discussed on the page, it should not appear in the infobox or in the tables as an accomplished product. The projected release date of 2014 is unsourced, and to say "it will be released in 2014" is inaccurate.
  • The preferred term for a film is "film". Not "movie".
  • Thomas and the UK Trip cannot be verified or reliably sourced. Please do not include this until it can be established.
  • The tables were cumbersome, with a colour coding that does not relate to anything, and additional horizontal lines. I had taken out the unnecessary detail, and added additional information to the films and specials section.

Hopefully, together we can improve this article. --Rob Sinden (talk) 20:40, 3 May 2012 (UTC)

But the movie is being made, I says it on TTTE wiki that's the only source I can find. And I promised I wouldn't fight with you again. The movie "is" being made. Bigshowandkane64 (talk) 21:17, 3 May 2012 (UTC)

Are you kidding me? Michael Legge is the voice of Luke is from blue mountain mystery!!!!!!!

It would appear that he did in fact play "Luke" in Blue Mountain Mystery[4], but I can't see that the character appeared in anything else. Therefore, I'd suggest that he is more of a guest character, and therefore probably doesn't belong in the table with the regular cast. I think that also there are too many of the cast in the infobox - this should not be exhaustive - and would suggest that we reduce this down maybe to just the narrators, but possibly includin main cast if there is opposition to this. --Rob Sinden (talk) 16:16, 12 December 2012 (UTC)

Character list

There use to be a character list in the article before. Is ok if I add it back or just leave it the way it is? Supermariokart64 (talk) 17:09, 27 January 2013 (UTC)

No because there already is a character list. CourtneyBonnick (talk) 20:03, 27 January 2013 (UTC)

No there isn't. There names are in the voice actor list and that doesn't count as a characters list Supermariokart64 (talk) 22:34, 27 January 2013 (UTC)

I don't think a character is really needed because the voice actor list also show the names of the characters that are in the series and plus I don't think a character list is really needed. CourtneyBonnick (talk) 22:39, 27 January 2013 (UTC)

I'm sorry I don't want to argue but I'm just saying I saw these when I was reading the article.

And That's why I was adding these to the article too.

Because they were unlisted. Supermariokart64 (talk) 23:06, 27 January 2013 (UTC)

No because the voice actor list already show the main characters and do you have a source that Pierce Brosnan was uncut from season 12? CourtneyBonnick (talk) 23:30, 27 January 2013 (UTC)

are going to stay there no matter what. It should be listed. Supermariokart64 (talk) 11:46, 28 January 2013 (UTC)

Why are you removing the links to the characters from the cast table? I'm not sure what you are trying to achieve. --Rob Sinden (talk) 11:54, 28 January 2013 (UTC)

I'm sorry Rob, I didn't mean to be so mad. I just wanted to add those two things to the article.

Because it's a thomas and friends article and these should be listed. I'm sorry for being mad, and I removed my rude comment. Do you accept my apology? Supermariokart64 (talk) 12:01, 28 January 2013 (UTC)

On Cartoon Network

I noticed that this show is now getting set to premiere on Cartoon Network, but don't have an citation. This would be good for the article to add this in. MrBumpFan (talk) 18:49, 11 Sat 2008 (UTC)

Do you have any evidence that makes that true? I've never seen or heard anything about that, nor have I confirmed a premire date or anything like that. Please comfirm this. Thank you. 66.83.138.210 (talk) 05:06, 6 April 2013 (UTC)

British.

I want to clarify the lead. Are we saying British Cartoon because it was created in Britain or are we saying it only shows in Britain ? Hell In A Bucket (talk) 13:37, 12 August 2013 (UTC)

Because it's a British production. --Rob Sinden (talk) 13:45, 12 August 2013 (UTC)
ok makes sense. I think we should have it in the main paragraph it's shown in the US too but I understand better now. Hell In A Bucket (talk) 15:07, 12 August 2013 (UTC)

Utter mess, and lacking information

This page still requires a bit of work to it. Hopeful the rearrangement I've done has help clean up the page just like the A team page but Proper information about its history etc is still missing and for unknown reason people would rather fill this page with wishy washy details. Problem IS---- This page is about the TV series not the brand. Two thirds of the Refs are about DVD and the commercial use of Thomas, so very little is ref about the actually TV show. I'm hopeful over maybe the next month ( a back log has appeared) I will be able to insert new details about its history etc, I hope others will be able to make changes. --Crazyseiko (talk) 14:38, 22 August 2013 (UTC)

Suggest A split

I would like to suggest we split the page in two.

  • Current page: About the history of Thomas & friends etc
  • NEW PAGE Thomas and Friends TV series: which would deal with only the TV series

--Crazyseiko (talk) 15:43, 22 August 2013 (UTC)

This page should only be about the TV series anyway. The history should be at The Railway Series. Or do you mean an umbrella "Thomas & Friends (franchise)" article to cover the spinoffs, films, theme parks, etc? --Rob Sinden (talk) 15:53, 22 August 2013 (UTC)
Bingo! Why is tv page have " Popularity with autistic audience" and "Commercialisation" should all be in umbrella "Thomas & Friends (franchise)" article which would direct links to The Railway Series, TV series, Films theme parks etc, Details about It would steamline this page and help direct users to simple overview. This page can Stick to TV series! --Crazyseiko (talk) 16:31, 22 August 2013 (UTC)
This will be taking place over the weekend unless objections appear. The new page "Thomas & Friends (franchise)" will also take stuff from other pages.--Crazyseiko (talk) 22:04, 23 August 2013 (UTC)

APPALLING EDITING

Since 23 August 2013 this page has been transformed from an interesting collation of subject and background information of the Series' into a hatchet job of quite appalling standard - where oh where are the edit police when you really need them? Someone take action please! — Preceding unsigned comment added by 91.143.193.204 (talk) 21:54, 4 September 2013 (UTC)

Perhaps you have some suggestions for improvement? This article has been in a poor state for a while, and it seemed to me that a user was making some progress towards improving it. --Rob Sinden (talk) 11:33, 6 September 2013 (UTC)

Perhaps I will, someone should - though it would be a mammoth task to re-write the important background info which has been so ruthlessly dumped - eg Britt Allcroft did not merely turn up at the Rev Awdry's house with the Railway Stories under her arm - there was a reason they met in the first place - also, the true reason why Shining Time Station was formulated in the USA has been ceremoniously dumped - and this is just starters. Many people will be interested in how just one idea turned into the giant it is today. Quite apart, the grammar and spelling are of poor quality. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 91.143.193.204 (talk) 17:26, 7 September 2013 (UTC)

Alec Baldwin and Michael Brandon

It says in the narrators section that Alec Baldwin narrated Series 7, while Michael Brandon re-narrated it. But Baldwin did not narrate Series 7. --Liam0035 16:00, 11 October 2013 (UTC)

The “TV Order” column in the episode lists

Is there any significance / relevance to the “TV Order” column? It has been included since Series 8, and for the most part is a number with a letter (a or b). It currently seems to be being allocated more or less arbitrarily, and at times in the past the values allocated seem to contradict the “original airdate” order, so which is to be believed? Perhaps it’s the first airdate order for other than in the UK – if this needs to be included (at all?) then it needs to be rather more specific as to what it represents!

It seems to me that it is irrelevant, as it’s a UK based series where the episodes are listed and numbered according to the broadcast "original (UK) airdate". Where the first airdates are all different within a series (i.e. not more than one new episode was first broadcast on a given day) the TV order column would appear to be irrelevant. If two or more new episodes are broadcast on the same day (possible, but fairly rare), it is likely that they will not both be aired at the same time (impossible for a single broadcaster?), so the order should then be based on the time as well (noting the time in the airdate column as well as the date in such cases if felt necessary?). If two separate broadcasters both first air a new episode at the same time on the same day (how likely is this???) then toss a coin / contact the series originator / alphabetic order on title / etc (!?!) and annotate accordingly.

Any thoughts?Kwerty (talk) 19:00, 21 August 2014 (UTC)

Will Duck, Oliver, Toad, Bill, Ben, Harvey, Skarloey, Rheneas, Sir Handel, Peter Sam, Rusty and Duncan stay in the series forever?

It's great to have Duck, Oliver, Toad, Bill, Ben, Harvey, Skarloey, Rheneas, Sir Handel, Peter Sam, Rusty and Duncan back in the series! I'm really glad they're not going away! Can they stay in the series forever?

How would we know if Duck, Oliver, Toad, Bill, Ben, Harvey, Skarloey, Rheneas, Sir Handel, Peter Sam, Rusty and Duncan? Who are you asking this? British or American?

Just noted this edit [5] from an IP. Made me wonder, what "Nationality" can this show be described as? For myself, being British, I've always known it to be distinctly "British" in origin and actors. Has that changed? Is there an american voiced version now? TF92 (talk) 16:47, 5 June 2015 (UTC)

It's unsourced so I think it's wise to cut until someone can show us that it's definitively a UK/US co-production. Cyphoidbomb (talk) 19:25, 5 June 2015 (UTC)

US financial data

Hi Highlymedia, what's your source for the financial data you added and changed here? In this reference I see an indication that 50,000 pounds = approx $95,000 USD, but you wrote $74,000. You also indicated that £1.3 million = approx $9.3.million USD. Can you substantiate this as well, please? Thanks. Cyphoidbomb (talk) 07:11, 21 December 2015 (UTC)

Surely one of the regular editors has the book reference mentioned for "It was made at a cost of £1.3 million (approximately $9.3.million in U.S. dollars)". So far as I can see, there have not been 7US$ to the GB£ since the 1850s, if ever. Davidships (talk) 18:44, 8 April 2016 (UTC)

switch from live models to CGI?

Does anyone know when the show made the switch from live models to computer animation? Elsquared (talk) 02:01, 20 January 2016 (UTC)

2009 is when the CGi was originally shown to the public, with the release of the full-CGi special, "Hero of the Rails". Before that, Series 12 of Thomas and Friends used CGi faces on the real-life models. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 173.54.139.99 (talk) 22:20, 19 March 2016 (UTC)

In the narrator section of the Infobox, someone incorrectly changed Michael Angelis' info on his years of work on the show, from "(1991-2012)" to "(1991-2019)". It needs to be fixed back to its original information as "(1991-2012)", because he worked on the show until 2012, not 2019. 2600:1000:B06A:2E0A:8890:204:5C98:EDF9 (talk) 04:29, 3 June 2020 (UTC)

Dangerous web links

In the list of references, see #12. It redirects to something that's trying to look like Google offering you a prize. Do not click those buttons. Also, since some of the other links redirect to the same website (#13 does... Some website called "sodor-island.net", might have been hacked, should probably avoid it completely), it can be assumed that some of the other links are bad as well. I am inexperienced with Wikipedia (in fact I created an account just to give this warning) and the article is locked, so I cannot fix it, but it is critical that these links are removed safely and quickly. I don't know who can do this, but it is important. SuperBeefJerkey (talk) 04:10, 24 July 2020 (UTC)

Sorry for near instant reply, but I have some info: There is a fansite "sodor-island.com" that appears to be safe, while a Google search doesn't turn up a "sodor-island.net". I can only assume that the ".net" one may have existed at some point, but it's domain is now being used for bad purposes. Any links to the ".net" one should be removed. SuperBeefJerkey (talk) 04:23, 24 July 2020 (UTC)

Read my previous statements here in the talk page... Bad web links... It's important, and I'm wondering why no one has done anything about it yet. SuperBeefJerkey (talk) 11:15, 10 August 2020 (UTC)

You need to state exactly what changes you would like made, word for word, so that an experienced editor can consider whether your suggestion is a good one, and if so make the change for you. Just saying that you want to add information on a particular subject, without saying exactly what information, doesn't enable anyone to actually make the change. Not ended - Mattel's official website calls the new episodes Season 25

Mattel's official website states that the Nelvana 2D episodes (planned to air in Fall 2021) are Season 25 of the series: https://corporate.mattel.com/news/mattel-television-greenlights-104-new-thomas-friendsR-television-episodes-and-2-specials The Wikipedia article has been changed to say that the show has already ended and that All Engines Go is a separate show, but "All Engines Go" seems to just be a subtitle used for the new 25th season (just like how the newer seasons were subtitled "Thomas & Friends: Big World! Big Adventures!"). FunhausFrank (talk) 20:58, 16 February 2021 (UTC)

It seems that since Mattel made that post, they have changed their mind and now consider this a full reboot rather than a continuation.
This blog from the executive producer of the new show:
https://corporate.mattel.com/news/mattel-television-announces-thomas-friends-all-engines-goand-unveils-new-creative-approach-to-thomas-content
To quote: “We are announcing our latest take on the classic franchise through a new show – “Thomas & Friends: All Engines Go,” which will premiere this fall.”
And later: “‘Thomas & Friends: All Engines Go’ is a series 75 years in the making. We can’t wait for everyone to join us on this journey when we launch this fall.
The former quote says “new show” and the latter says “series”, not “season”. The characters are different from their “old” selves as described in the article. So I would definitely describe AEG as a reboot, not a continuation of the existing Thomas & Friends. BWBA was not a reboot but just a minor revamp of the existing show, adding a subtitle but still being part of the same show, so BWBA would not have its own article - but I think AEG is a rebooted show that needs its own article and that Thomas & Friends as we know it has ended after 24 seasons.
I have not reverted the page back to the edits I made a few days ago just yet as I want to see what other people think. 🙂HillValleyTelegraph (talk) 22:50, 17 February 2021 (UTC)

Michael Brandon's years narration info in the infobox needs to be corrected right away, from "(2003–2012)" to "(2004–2012)". The reason being is because his episodes didn't start airing in the US until 2004, the year 2003 is when the episodes began airing in the UK.

Fix as shown here: Michael Brandon: US: (2003–2012) to Michael Brandon: US: (2004–2012)

Fanon and non-characters

I've noticed that a lot of the information listed on this page seems to be entirely made up. The character of Spencer is never known as "Spencer the Silver Bullet Engine" in any official source. Not is Emily ever officially referred to as "Emily the Beautiful Engine". Emily's coaches are not "0-6-0", as the Whyte system does not apply to rolling stock.

There are also a lot of characters listed who are not actually characters. The Ice Cream Wagons are not characters- they do not speak, they have no faces, no personality is described. You can no more describe them as "characters" than you could describe the track as such.

I think Emily is actually Emily the Green Engine 2601:248:8003:8E50:DD1B:3E:9C41:7D95 (talk) 02:45, 23 September 2020 (UTC)

That's already Henry's description. Emily is "the Stirling Engine". Robin S. Taylor (talk) 23:18, 14 May 2021 (UTC)

Later Years

This section begins in 2002, only halfway through the series by time span and well under halfway by volume of material. I think the term "later years" shouldn't apply until about 2013 or maybe even 2018. Robin S. Taylor (talk) 23:26, 14 May 2021 (UTC)

Unsourced episode lists

I've had these on my watchlist for a few years, mainly due to IPs adding utter rubbish like font colours or trivia notes. However, I have a major problem with the unsourced air dates. IMDb is very patchy on them, and I can find no other sources (and no, Thomas Wikia does not count as a source). As it stands, every one of the episode list articles prior to series 15 needs to be tagged as {{unreferenced}}. Mac Dreamstate (talk) 13:47, 8 August 2021 (UTC)

Website Gone

I don't know exactly when it happened (must check Wayback Machine), but thomasandfriends.com is now just a themed section of the Mattel toy catalogue instead of a website for the TV series. Robin S. Taylor (talk) 22:36, 22 March 2022 (UTC)

Why is the main image of this article a image from the original series? Why isn't it a more up to date Thomas logo? Thomasfan1000 (talk) 13:09, 13 February 2022 (UTC)

Because this is not an article about All Engines Go! This is an article about the original show. It's that simple. NintendoTTTEfan2005 (talk) 00:37, 13 September 2022 (UTC)

Explanation of what happened to image

So for anybody wondering what happened to the images in the last year here is an explanation: the logo was removed from Commons as a non-free Commons file and it removed this from Wikipedia too, so I reuploaded it and added it to the franchise article but somebody removed it again and uploaded literally the same file so my version of the file was deleted as a "non-used fair use file." Somebody added a picture from the original series to this article but it eventually got removed too. I don't get why the file needed to change, the modern logo was just fine. RanDom 404 (talk) 01:32, 11 May 2022 (UTC)

@RanDom 404: Non-free images shouldn't be uploaded to the Commons. They should be uploaded on en.wikipedia with appropriate fair-use rational. Skipple 01:23, 13 September 2022 (UTC)
