the survivor of them[edit]

Peter Thellusson directed the income of his property [...] to be accumulated during the lives of his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren, living at the time of his death, and the survivor of them.

What does the last phrase mean? The most obvious sense is "the last living among them", but that's redundant. The next most obvious is "and their next-of-kin", but then it ought to be plural. —Tamfang (talk) 09:08, 9 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]
