Initial comments[edit]

I'm not very confident at writing an NPOV description of a book that had an emotional impact on me, and would appreciate any assistance at describing the unique qualities of this book from a neutral, descriptive standpoint. I found Didion's book to be very unique in the manner I tried to express in this article, but fear that I've sounded critical, instead of appreciative of her approach. In the info box, the release date is listed as 2001. As the book was released in 2005, I am editing this.

Answer to previous post.[edit]

I found your summary to be a tribute to Ms. Didion and Mr. J.G. Dunne's writing. I have been a fan of both of them since I was a precocious teenager in the early 1980's. Your summary reminded me of the author's multi-layered, spare style. Thank you.

Some editing and new information.[edit]

The book is tough to pin down, but I did not agree that the book began with a simple re-telling of the experience. In fact it begins with Didion's computer notes following the event. I heard her speak at Central Park a few months ago, and remember she said that the structure of the book was meant to mimick the way in which she relived the experience day after day. I wasn't sure how to cite this, but thought the narrative structure of the book, which is really behind much of its critical acclaim, should be mentioned.

Unfortunately, I've been told youcan't cite things you have heard an author say, even at public appearances. It makes sense - Wikipedia is meant to refer to externally verifiable sources, and unless your observations of the author have been published in another journal, they are not an externally verifiable source.
