Lead section[edit]

Should we mention Irving in the Lead section? -- Ssilvers (talk) 23:04, 15 August 2021 (UTC)[reply]

I'm just a little bit worried about the Irving connexion. The ODNB states it unequivocally, but I cannot find mention of it in any other source, which I find surprising to say the least, and I am inclined to play it down failing a second source for it. As you can see, I have said "According to the ODNB..." which reflects my lurking reservations. I should be pleased to be proved wrong. Tim riley talk 06:45, 16 August 2021 (UTC)[reply]
OK, very sensible. The Lead seems a little thin to me, but other than that, I can't think what else would be a particular highlight to add to it. -- Ssilvers (talk) 22:42, 16 August 2021 (UTC)[reply]

The magazine's political bent or other point of view?[edit]

Can someone add anything (in addition to the titles of prominent articles from The Theatre that are mentioned) that gives an idea of Scott's or other editors' political or artistic point of view as expressed editorially in The Theatre? -- Ssilvers (talk) 05:39, 16 August 2021 (UTC)[reply]

If you are interested in pursuing this, a good place to start might be sections II, III and IV of the late Helene Harlin Wong's The Late Victorian Theatre: as Reflected in 'The Theatre,' 1878-1897, to which there is a link in the Sources section of the article. The dissertation has sections on The Theatre's line on such things as a national theatre, a national dramatic academy, the Church, government censorship, and – Scott's King Charles's head – Ibsen and the new drama. For the article as it stands I went no further than the first, historical, section, but the other sections would be fruitful for research into the magazine's opinions. – Tim riley talk 07:09, 16 August 2021 (UTC)[reply]
I looked at Wong's thesis, and it seems excellent, but I do not have time at present to pick out the details from those chapters. I hope that someone will come along and do so, but the article is in good shape already. -- Ssilvers (talk) 23:58, 16 August 2021 (UTC)[reply]
