Speedy deletion[edit]

Hello. This is my first time creating a Wikipedia page. We have plenty of documentation to support the importance and significance of the Society for the Arts in Dementia Care. We are a long-standing non-profit organization dedicated to improving the lives of those living with dementia by providing international conferences on creative expression, communication and dementia.

In Canada, according to Health Canada, one in four people over the age of 80 will have some form of cognitive impairment. Each year, this population will be increased by 75,000 new cases. Nearly quarter of a million Canadians are currently needed to take care of this aging population. This will undoubtedly cause a major impact on the health care system.

Since there is no cure at this time for dementia, we must find ways to engage people with dementia in other ways that maintain and/or improve their quality of life. The arts have been shown to be an integral part of our human makeup.

Our Society's mandate is to bring forward to the practitioners, academia, the medical field, etc, the important link between the arts, aging and dementia care. There has been a trend in the last 10 years that recognizes that the use of creative expression activities, specifically in dementia care, is crucial to keep these people still engaged in life.

We would appreciate your patience, as this Wikipedia page is still a work in progress. I was just starting to gain an understanding about how this medium works. Please do not delete it. Thank you.Dr. Dalia Gottlieb-Tanaka (talk) 23:13, 20 November 2010 (UTC)[reply]

  • If the article is to be kept, you need to establish Notability, a requirement to have a Wikipedia article, which is not a matter of opinion but must be demonstrated by showing "significant coverage in reliable sources that are independent of the subject." Thank you, John, for your advice and help. I added what is considered "significant coverage" in the arts and dementia world to the wikipedia page for the Society for the Arts in Dementia Care. As to whether this fits the bill for Wikipedia is beyond my knowledge. Please inform me if what I have added tonight is sufficient for now (or is at least on the right track, as this is my first time using such a medium). If need be, the Society has plenty more sources, including evaluations of our work; our most recent being from Pfizer Canada! Also, if you can advise me on a better heading than "coverage", that would be of most help too. If we get the A-OK to keep the page, I will whip out my literary skills and fashion an article instead of offering some list of what others say about us, alas it will have to wait until I see that there is a light at the end of this tunnel. You are on the right track. The sources you have added are enough to invalidate speedy deletion. Remember that only nontrivial coverage in third-party reliable sources can establish notability. Most of the sources you have used in the article are third-party sources, so if they provide significant coverage of the Society, notability should be established. The "Coverage" section includes many quotes from the various articles about the Society. It is better to write these in your own words and integrate the content throughout the article. (Do not paraphrase too closely though, or you may fall afoul of Wikipedia:Close paraphrasing.)

Keep in mind the following policies when you edit the article: Wikipedia:Neutral point of view, Wikipedia:Conflict of interest, and Wikipedia:No original research, and Wikipedia:Verifiability. The policy Wikipedia:No original research forbids the inclusion of content that has not already appeared in a secondary reliable source.
