Literary significance and reception[edit]

I've deleted the comments regarding the gloves worn by Jimmy Theiseger as this appears to be original research which is against Wikipedia rules. Plot summary[edit]

"Plot summaries have a tendency to grow past the recommended 300 to 500 word length." (Wikipedia:Plot_summaries). This one is over 3,500. Hence the plot tag. Nevile Strange (talk) 22:26, 6 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]

...and the link you provided above goes on to say, "and longer as needed for adequate discussion of a longer work, especially if the plot is very complicated." hence my removal of your comment. Please feel free to shorten the plot summary (which I provided in the first place) if in doing so you still make it relevant to the article but please don't simply tag it and then move on. I trimmed the summary by more than 900 words from a starting point of 2,281 words. I think it is still way over the 800 word limit, but this was all I could do in one long session of trimming out words, and a few plot events that seemed minor in contrast to other events. Jtomlin1uk has done so much for articles on Agatha Christie novels; I followed the existing structure rather than start over. --Prairieplant (talk) 10:52, 17 December 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Lady Coote[edit]

Change reversed. The character is named in chapter two in the line, '"My dear Maria," rose the voice of Sir Oswald in mild irritation, "I have told you over and over again not to hesitate when you are wondering whether to finesse or not. I don't dispute that her Christian name is Maria, and that her husband would address her as such as you quote. What I'm saying is that all of the third person references to her in the novel are as 'Lady Coote', without the Christian name Maria. As the wife of Sir Oswald Coote her title is simply Lady Coote. Describing her as Lady Maria Coote implies aristocratic birth as the daughter of a duke, marquess or earl. This is clearly not the case given that she describes her rather humble beginnings when she reminisces abour her courtship with her husband. Her corect title is Lady Coote. If her Christian name is to be included, it should be in brackets e.g. Lady (Maria) Coote, to signify that she has gained her title through marriage, and not through birth.
