Accuracy?[edit]

It seems to me that some of the information in the description of the plot is false/misunderstood - perhaps the reader wasn't fluent in German. Also, there really should be a source citation for the sentence "...he was mourned by thousands.", but I'm not really sure how to add that in. Wedge 15:45, 8 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Agreed. It seems a bit inaccurate. I'm about to go back and re-read, so I'll change info as I read it. I'll also try and translate the character list (cf. Draußen vor der Tür, auf Deutsch), as the way Borchert explains the charaters is rather important. I'll keep this updated CKnapp 19:58, 13 Nov 2006 (UTC)

Added translated character list. The translation is overly literal... My German skills seem to have slipped a bit. I wouldn't mind of someone edited it. 20:58, 13 Nov 2006 (UTC)

I also changed the translation of the name... Which I've noticed is also on another English Wikipedia Page Wolfgang Borchert. Does anyone have any info as to why it has been translated as The Man Outside. It just doesn't make sense to me. It just sounds like poor translation. Draußen vor der Tür is literally Outside Before the Door or Outside in Front of the Door. It also has a similar despairful connotation. The Man Outside seems to distance itself form the play. The strength of the play is that you feel empathy for Beckmann, which you can't do if he's just some man somewhere... *rant off*

I'll temporarily change it back, since that seems like a fairly ubiquitous translation, but I'd like some input as to why that translation is used. Knapp20:09 15 Nov 2006.

Construction[edit]

Hm... There's more in the 5th scene than I thought. I'm working on it. I think I'll remove the construction though, because the play seems to be adequately summarized.
