Having just watched it, and reading the French article linked here, I must say that the adaptation is indeed very different from the original French movie. The American English adaptation of the original Swiss story turned out to be very American indeed, and quite funny at that, in my own view. However, it is no surprise that American film critics are so negatively critical of the movie. That's because American culture in general is much more "puritan" than the French speaking one, and it completely does not like or accept the way in which French culture laughs and makes jokes about sex. So, even though the writer/director of this American English version of the story was able to adapt it pretty well to the themes and problems of marriage and love in America, the cultural "puritan" critics still feel that the essential character of the adaptation is basically foreing, French in its approach to the matter. The result is the very negative criticism of the movie by American critics that we see reported in the English page here (in the "Reception" section). My two cents...
