Name origin[edit]

I just spent a little time trying to figure out whether Eliza was actually responsible for naming Texada (or at least moving the name from Lasqueti Island to Texada Island), or whether Akriggs made a mistake in attributing it to Eliza. Unfortunately, as usual it is all a little complex. But if nothing else, this McDowell book I just added as a reference says Narváez is responsible for the name "Texada" appearing at all. Apparently Narváez's journal of his voyage is lost. McDowell describes his fruitless search through old archives. But there are, in addition to various maps by Eliza, Narváez, and Carrasco, there are summary reports of Narváez's voyage, written in Nootka shortly after. I'm thinking that Akriggs didn't go through as many old sources as McDowell. It's not that important, but interesting in showing another possible example of an error in Akriggs. re map[edit]

Great like all the ones you're creating...; but more important than showing Powell River (and Sehchelt) is showing Blubber Bay and Vananda and Gillies Bay Also labelling Lasqueti Island would be a good thing; Savary's too tiny to be seen well.Skookum1 (talk) 18:59, 27 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Ok, added those towns and Lasqueti. Also added Parksville, seeing as it is larger than Sechelt and there was space on the map for it. Courteney and Comox are sizable too, but there isn't room. A small extension of the map southward would show Nanaimo, but I figured there's already enough context and it's good to keep wiki maps small and focused. I see the ferry goes to French Creek near Parksville, but Parksville seems to be the more populous of the two. Pfly (talk) 20:15, 27 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Parksville's kind of part of Greater Nanaimo, which could be shown instead I'd say as a far more important place (Parksville is a sea of retirement housing....). I didn't know there wa a ferry to French Creek, actually - i thought you could only get to Texada from the Sunshine Coast....Skookum1 (talk) 17:33, 19 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]
And sorry see below about Vananda/Van Anda name change; didnt' know about that, must have been in recent years....Skookum1 (talk) 17:44, 19 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Belated reply -- the map I have shows a ferry from French Creek to Lasqueti Island, but not Texada. It also shows Vananda as spelled that way. Perhaps I'll get around to updating the map sometime or other.... Pfly (talk) 04:26, 21 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]
What you get for making good maps is everybody wanting more from you ;-) French Creek might best be on a map for Lssqueti Island then.Skookum1 (talk) 21:26, 21 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

How bout Raven Bay, Lime Kiln or Pocohantas? hien? Nice map by the way...sfs —Preceding unsigned comment added by 24.81.76.183 (talk) 01:35, 1 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

On a close-up map someday maybe; pfly's done great with just making this one (and many others elsewhere....); no room for island-details on this one.Skookum1 (talk) 17:48, 19 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]
one last thing (looks great btw) it looks really odd without Powell Lake (British Columbia); and Clowhom Lake; parts of the cost are visually id'd this way, sort of; the Queen Charlotte Strait area up to the Dean Channel would ook downright odd without Owikeeno Lake and the other freshwater near-inlets and the maze of saltwater lagoons south from Owikeeno to Kwakwaka'wakw turf; boggling, I know, I've digi-mapped it like a human pantograph, parsing data from bsemap into bivouac.com....yikes it was a lot of work that area; anyway Powell Lake is visually part of hte location of Powell River; a t some point a pre-andpost hydro devleopmenbt map of the region is gonna be worth doing...the same is true of a lot of hydro projects inBC, includingg htethe ones I was riased around the Bridge River Power Project and Stave River Power Project near Lillooet andMission respectivcely; anyway, g'nite, gota hit the hay; check my talkpage over the next day or two, I'm gonna pile up the browser tablinks I've had open on various projects that I may not have tme to get at on my own; also thinkgin about User talk:Skookum1/Original Research Wiki....dead tired, not gonna get at other mutual topics oniight as I'd intended; Capania Island btw was Compania Island, with the tilde; named for his crew (su compania, again with tilde), I'd guess, or the Catalunyans? Colnett's role in teh namings around there should be laid out; I just removed Princess Royal Island from the Monarchy in British Columbia legacy area btw.06:19, 29 April 2008 (UTC)
Yea, lakes are a bit of a pain. The Puget Sound area looks weird without Lake Washington, that's for sure. I may be taking a little break from making maps, but when I get back to it I'll see about adding some key lakes. Another weirdness with the DCW coastline data is that it leaves out Boundary Bay -- the coastline follows the 49th parallel right to Point Roberts. Annoying... Pfly (talk) 21:50, 29 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Did you see the datalink I posted for Karl Musser at Talk:Columbia River? http://www.geobase.org I think.....not sure what kind of data DCW is, maybe it's the Canadian equivalent? See the bottom of my talkpage for a link to a new BC map Karl generated using it...Skookum1 (talk) 16:10, 30 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Van Anda vs. Vananda[edit]

IS it Van Anda or Vananda? sfs. Where is the Hydro slash, the gas pipeline and the Squamish Five?

I jsut looked it up on BCGNIS via a google search and it seems that all instances of "Vananda" have been officially replaced by "Van Anda"....the enviro issues have yet to be added; whatever's on the Squamish Five page that's cited can be transplanted here, if you'd care to.....Skookum1 (talk) 17:30, 19 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Satire does not carry well on the talk page. sfs —Preceding unsigned comment added by 24.81.76.183 (talk) 13:53, 24 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Nor do deadpan quips....I gather you mean the Sq5 content reads like satire? One reason I avoid editing that article is because I can't take it on NPOV....I think they were a bunch of silly twits, and their followoers gropuies-in-search-of-a-revolutionary.....sicne they weren't actually on Texada, and only planned to blow a powerline that crossed it, that might be worth mentioniing in teh article.....did that powerline ever get built btw?Skookum1 (talk) 16:10, 24 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Yup, the line was built in 1981, with the western end of the DC subsea link, at Dunsmuir Substation near Qualicum, the target of Ms. Belmas. The slash is still on texada to prove it. sfs —Preceding unsigned comment added by 24.81.76.183 (talk) 02:35, 26 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

As per the redlink shown, this should be a separate article as it would ahve different cats applicable and is a history article per se. I jsut found some details at British Columbia: From the earliest times to the present, Vol. II, E.O.S. Scholefield and F.W. Howay, 1905, pp. 336-337 if someone else would care to condense what's there (I'd be too labourious and tend to crib by near-plagiarist tricks of rearranging grammar and substituting synonyms etc.... ;-).Skookum1 (talk) 17:27, 19 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Amor et al.[edit]

I once read the Royal commission into the scandal. (irritating as it is on fiche.) From what I remember, de Cosmos bought land around the iron deposits on Gillies Bay in 1876 (corr. 1873). The iron was plentiful. De Cosmos was also an MLA, if not Premier at the time, so it reeked of corruption. The hundred page report investigated but found no wrong doing. The iron was used 20 years later. The account is a long cross-examination of the witnesses, how they travelled by steamer from Nanaimo, camped, staked claims and interacted with various people. sfs —Preceding unsigned comment added by 24.81.76.183 (talk) 19:54, 23 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

William Rayner's book on scandals in British Columbia, sorry I don't remember its title, has a full chapter on the scandal.Skookum1 (talk) 20:15, 23 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]
