Rublev is Russian[edit]

Andrey Rublev is a Russian as can be verified by multiple sources. The Russian flag shows that he is Russian like for the other players as well their flag is shown. Paradise Chronicle (talk) 10:57, 5 April 2023 (UTC)[reply]

As with all other tennis articles that flag is only present because that is the flag they competed under at the time the event was played. It is never used for citizenship. It is national tennis affiliation per their pro tennis registration. Since 1 March 2022, no Russian or Belarus player can compete under their nationality. They are banned. No flag is used in events per the WTA, ATP, or ITF governing bodies. We leave it blank just as the governing bodies of tennis do. Those players can compete in no international "team" events at all (like Davis Cup or Billie Jean King Cup), flag or not. Fyunck(click) (talk) 19:36, 5 April 2023 (UTC)[reply]
This is not explained in the article and sounds like WP:OR to me. Can you provide a link to the relevant discussion? Like that the flag is not for citizenship or that the flag should be removed even when it is uncited? Paradise Chronicle (talk) 20:02, 5 April 2023 (UTC)[reply]
The flagicon issue is in Wikipedia MOS with specific mention of sports nationalities. You'll note in the infobox for Taylor Fritz it says sports country... not citizenship. If we were to use it for citizenship then we couldn't use it at all per MOS. Professional sports like auto racing and tennis governing bodies use the flags icons to show the registered nation the person represents. They actually have to register with the ITF showing that the tennis association of that nation is backing them. If you dont get backing you can't play. I'm not sure how auto racing does it. Some wiki articles and tournaments put notes to let readers know that no flag is used since March 1 2022... see the seeds at 2023 Australian Open – Men's singles. The discussions are all over the map from Project Tennis to multiple tennis personalities. And OR would be adding a flag backed by no authorized source. Thanks for the explanation and sorry for the discussion. If another one asks similar questions again, MOS:SPORTSFLAG convinced me.Paradise Chronicle (talk) 20:48, 5 April 2023 (UTC)[reply]
I never remember where those items are years after discussion. Thanks. Fyunck(click) (talk) 20:50, 5 April 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Yeah, SPORTSFLAG convinced me, but newspapers keep reporting on the Russian Rublev, so I am not sure if SPORTSFLAG still applies. For me this omission is more a withholding information for the readers. Without explanation it looks like a mistake of Wikipedia, which it is not.
