Bowing on the flute[edit]

The article says of the breakdown in the piece's first broadcast:

It later transpired that the orchestra's leader, Paul Beard, had altered the bowing of the string parts to make them more readable, and so public criticism for the collapse was transferred to him and his modifications.... [explanation of real reason for collapse cut] In a further irony... the flute part (which had NOT been altered) was at the point of error written in the complex manner deemed by Beard as unnecessarily complicated for the violins.

Flutes are not played with bows, but the only change noted in the article made by Beard is to the bowing. Presumably something else must have been changed, or else this comparison with the notation of the flute part is irrelevant. Can anybody clarify?

Also, what is this "Bowen" given as a reference? We need a full citation for it somewhere. --Camembert (talk) 12:46, 18 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]
