I found a comment on a Youtube video (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=p4tYThad-Bw) purporting to be from the grandchild of the lyricist Will J. Harris. It reads as follows:
Hola Checha. I would love to communicate with you through email. How can I give you my email address privately? I still receive royalties from this song believe it or not. My grandfather was a prolific lyricist who wrote many songs but all but Sweet Sue and one other are now in the public domain. He originally started his writing career for Yiddish Theater and there is a poster of his song "Yonkel the Cowboy Jew" hanging in the Ellis Island museum. Sweet Sue was written for an actress, Sue Carol Ladd. She was originally from Chicago and my grandfather knew her well. Let's continue our conversations through email. I am thoroughly enjoying our correspondence.
I have now added this to the article but could only find one source: the LA times article I've cited in my edit to the article. Given that this was found with the rather biased search terms '"Sue Carol Ladd" "sweet sue"' I think there's some room for doubt on credibility.
