Nickname[edit]

@Jweiss11: @MisterCake: @KingSkyLord: @Corkythehornetfan: @WilliamJE: @Frietjes: My newspaper searches turn up zero evidence that the Stevens football teams used the "Ducks" nickname in the 19th century. My searches indicate they were simply known as "Stevens" or "Stevens Institute" without a nickname. Have any of you seen evidence as to when the nickname came into usage? My inclination is to move the 19th century season articles so as to omit the nickname, but I wanted to check here first to make sure I'm not missing something. I don’t see any articles, either, that use ‘Ducks’ during the 19th century or as far up as 1921. All I find are the names you’ve mentioned. Corky 02:51, 22 May 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Stevens’ mascot became the duck in spring of 1972. Cake (talk) 03:24, 22 May 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Cake's source seems pretty spot on. As Template:Stevens Ducks football navbox only covers seasons from 1872-1924, I suggest renaming it the "Stevens football navbox" or perhaps "Stevens Institute football navbox". Likewise, moving the nine currently extant season articles to reflect the same naming. Thoughts? Cbl62 (talk) 04:16, 22 May 2020 (UTC)[reply]
I renamed this article to remove "Ducks". Seems though the team was often referred to as "Stevens Tech", particularly in the later years of the program, so perhaps the article should be titled Stevens Tech football? The categories for sports at the school all use "Tech": Category:Stevens Tech Ducks, although it appears the school's teams are now just "Stevens": see https://stevensducks.com/ and https://gomacsports.com/standings.aspx?path=mbball&div=mac-freedom.
