Wikiproject Prisons[edit]

If anyone's interested, I've proposed a new wikiproject for the creation and improvement of articles regarding specific prisons, internment camps, and detention centers here. --Cdogsimmons (talk) 02:00, 23 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Coordinates[edit]

For now I've placed the coordinates at 51°30′58″N 0°7′21″W / 51.51611°N 0.12250°W / 51.51611; -0.12250 which is the location of the current St Giles Almshouses in Macklin St. This ref seems to support a location just east of Drury Lane (ie Macklin St). On the other hand, Church of St. Giles-in-the-Fields', Survey of London: volume 5: St Giles-in-the-Fields, pt II (1914), pp. 127-140 seems to imply it was north of the church (on High Holborn?) :

"In 1686, directions were given by the vestry to erect "a substantial gate out of the wall of the churchyard near the round house." The gateway, which was of brick, was completed in 1687. It cost, with the necessary alterations to the churchyard, £185 14s. 6d., Love's bill being £27. (fn. 19) In 1800, according to the inscription, it was rebuilt, this time in stone, and remained on the north side of the churchyard until 1865. "

So I don't know how you square those two. But then you don't know how far the churchyard and prison extended back in those days, there may even have been two roundhouses, that first reference makes a point of referring to the "old" round house. I'm no expert on this stuff, I'm just trying to get some articles geotagged, so I leave it to someone who knows more about it... 82.20.52.30 (talk) 09:52, 4 September 2009 (UTC)[reply]
