I placed the POV tag when creating the article because it is pasted from a US government website. Because this comes from a US govt source it may not be neutral, but I don't have the expertise to judge. (Hopefully others that know more will simply remove the tag if they think the article looks okay.) Mangostar (talk) 05:05, 28 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]

More detail required[edit]

The relationship between the US and South Africa is a fascinating one, and this article does nowhere near doing it justice. What about the fact the ANC were on the terror watch list until 2008. How Mbeki was at odds with Bush's flagship anti HIV prrogram due to Mbeki's Aids denialism. How Mandela supported Cuba, Libya and Iran, and bought oil from Iran. How there was a Cuba summit. How Mandela criticized US AID, saying it was interference. There is a lot more to say, and I only read this in one day, so I bet someone can improve this. I suggest starting with looking at the Library of Congress who have some good articles on South Africa, and it's political issues. I am not a skilled enough writer to do it, and hope someone else can. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Mark gg daniels (talkcontribs) 04:33, 7 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Agreed. The history section is way too short. It begins with the Reagan era which ignores previous administration's relations with SA. (Including Jimmy Carter, under whom we vetoed sanctions against them at the UN.)Rja13ww33 (talk) 16:53, 23 June 2017 (UTC)[reply]
I added some sources below that can aid in developing the history. let me know what you think! — Preceding unsigned comment added by Emsavi (talkcontribs) 20:12, 6 February 2019 (UTC)[reply]
I'd like to thank everyone for their contributions to expanding the history section. Well done. May add some more myself.Rja13ww33 (talk) 18:29, 18 April 2019 (UTC)[reply]
I think the lede currently saying the relationship simply experienced "strain" during the Apartheid era, quoting only the USG itself as a source, is a particularly huge error of omission and oversimplification. Barring objections I hope to get around to better summarizing the ways the US supported the Afrikaners during this period in spite of occasional tensions. Hmm, that is an issue. I think part of the issue is that only TWO sources are cited in the entire lead, one of which is a CRS report. There have to be better sources out there. Historyday01 (talk) 18:55, 27 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]
The LEAD should summarize the article. No sources are necessary if the statements are sourced in the main body of the article.Rja13ww33 (talk) 20:47, 27 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I guess, but if something is contentious, there should be a source. Historyday01 (talk) 03:09, 28 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]
