Redirect to Sonia Sotomayor[edit]

Why does "Sotomayor" redirect to a US judge nominated(!) for Supreme Court instead of two Olympic medal winner, six world championship gold medal winner, world record holder for high jump both indoors and outdoors, Javier Sotomayor? It should redirect at least to disambiguation, if not straight to Mr. Sotomayor. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 81.186.237.54 (talk) 14:30, 4 June 2009 (UTC)[reply]

I think this article should be the primary topic under "Sotomayor" but perhaps the disambig hatnote could include Javier Sotomayor as well as other uses. Jonathunder (talk) 15:20, 4 June 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Sotomayor should def. redir to the disambig, where they should be alphabetized with the other Sotomayors. Javier is known by a hell of a lot more people in the world than Sonia, that's for sure. -- Y not? 15:39, 4 June 2009 (UTC)[reply]
I think that the Sotomayor page should, as it does currently, redirect to Sonia Sotomayor with a link to the disambig page at the top. There is really no easy way to quantify the popularity of the two individuals, but a quick search on google returned 8.3 million hits for "Sonia Sotomayor" and only 52 thousand hits for "Javier Sotomayor" (both names in quotes), a difference of more than 2 orders of magnitude (100 times)! Moreover, since the Sonia Sotomayor supreme court nomination and confirmation is underway the redirect here seems more appropriate. jheiv (talk) 15:50, 4 June 2009 (UTC)[reply]
There is now a hatnote at the top of this article for Javier Sotomayor. Jonathunder (talk) 17:21, 4 June 2009 (UTC)[reply]
@Jheiv - your diagnosis is recentism. About the same 700 unique G-hits for both "sonia sotomayor" and "javier sotomayor", but realize that Sonia is an American-only celebrity and Javier has lots of 80's pre-internet notability among track and field fans of all countries. It is no contest, really. Javier is by far the better known. -- Y not? 18:16, 4 June 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Although it's only a matter of time before she is of greater notability, I would prefer no redirect. I'm not interested in reading an article in which the first item mentioned is what redirects to the article.--brewcrewer (yada, yada) 18:34, 7 June 2009 (UTC)[reply]
In terms of actual readerships stats for these articles, for April 2009 (before the Supreme Court vacancy was known) Sonia got 2,983 hits and Javier got 3,044 hits – about the same. Since then, Sonia has gotten much more; for June so far it's 61,778 to 667, a two orders of magnitude difference. Having said that, I don't care how the redirects and disambigs are done. We can always change them in the future. Seems that, for the time being, most people looking up the surname will be looking for the judge. bd2412 T 00:32, 5 June 2009 (UTC)[reply]
If you clicked on Lincoln you get a disambiguation page, yet we can all agree that most people are looking for Abraham Lincoln. Make it a disambiguation page. If people want a to look her up, they can click on her name in the disambiguation page.--Jojhutton (talk) 00:36, 5 June 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Simply put, I would not agree that most people are looking for Abraham Lincoln. Other things, namely the cities, have similar notability. In this case, however, it has been shown that, at least at the current time and for the foreseeable future, Sonia has is of greater notability. jheiv (talk) 18:32, 8 June 2009 (UTC)[reply]
