Greg Russo is wrong about the Star-Club in Croydon: Star-Club refers to the German label and music club, that initially started this whole project. My information is from the liner notes of the 1966 Mercury edition of the album(E-Kartoffel (talk) 21:27, 18 March 2010 (UTC))
- There seems to be three different references to "Star Club":
- Star-Club Records – a German record label, partnered(?) with Lippmann and Rau and their American Folk Blues Festivals. An early German Williamson and the Yardbirds album was released on this label.
- Star-Club – the famous 1960s Hamburg club. Apparently Williamson and other AFBF blues artists also played there. The original Mercury album prominently displays "IMPORTED FROM THE STAR-CLUB GERMANY". However, there is no indication that the Clapton-era Yardbirds ever played there, with or without Williamson. Whatever relationship there is between the actual club and the record label does not appear to extend to the Williamson/Yardbirds album (except for name recognition promotional value).
- Star Hotel, Croydon a.k.a. Star Club – Tony Bacon writes "Gomelsky added another couple of venues, presumably with the intention of building a Crawdaddy 'circuit', opening at the Star Hotel in Croydon". Schumacher calls it the Star Club in his Clapton biography, as does Clapton in his autobiography, and Gomelsky in The Yardbirds Story liner notes. The club has also been referred to as the "Crawdaddy", "Crawdaddy Star Hotel", etc., which may be the source of some of the confusion.
- Williamson and the Yardbirds were recorded December 8, 1963, at the Crawdaddy Club (Richmond). However, they did a test recording on December 7 at the Star with two Williamson songs that were re-recorded the next day. Russo indicates that these earlier two recordings were released on the original Williamson/Yardbirds album, with the two December 8 recordings later released in 1981 by Lippmann and Rau's L + R label. Gomelsky uses the December 8 date for all songs on the album and also includes the December 7 test songs on The Yardbirds Story.
