December 2012[edit]

After spending some time reading the references in the articles yesterday, it appears that the GPO building has been rebuilt, but it is not yet staffed, nor equipped, nor is there yet a distribution network for collection or delivery. This is consistent with the Somali Post's plans and timeline (so far), and the article at Communications in Somalia#Postal service, as far as I can tell. It seems that Somali Postal Service should be rewritten to reflect the same until such time as there is anything new reported by the MIPT or a reliable in-country source. —[AlanM1(talk)]— 17:50, 13 December 2012 (UTC)[reply]

It is already indicated that the GPO was rebuilt, but that, per the Information ministry, the Somali Postal Service itself is slated to re-launch next year. I think the bit Phil wrote about the unauthorized stamps is relevant. However, it should probably be integrated into the main flow of the text, in the history section. The part that suggests that the Somali Postal Service has not issued official stamps is unnecessary, as it hasn't relaunched yet. Middayexpress (talk) 18:02, 13 December 2012 (UTC)[reply]

I dont know,why everyone saying that The Postal service stopped at 1990. UPU has information of the Somalia Post till 2004. UPU insure that till 2004 a company named "Somal Post Corporation" worked for providing postal service.but what happening now,its not clear to us.I had talked with some person of UPU regarding it.They said that Somalia have workable postal authority. The UPU link is dated to 2004 and doesn't say anything about the previous years [1]. In the intervening years, residents have been using traditional methods of dispatching parcels and letters. The Ministry of Information, Post and Telecommunications has also announced that it is set to relaunch the postal cooperation in 2013/this year (c.f. [2]). the UPU link says,at 2004 there was a authority named Somal pos corporation.so at that time,Somal post corporation might be responsible for providing postal service at Somalia.but everyone saying that,it was stopped at 1990.i have talked with upu.they said that Somalia has working postal authority.

There has been no functioning official postal service during the civil war, even if, in theory, the institutions still existed legally and membership of UPU continued. People resorted to electronic communications, telephone, private couriers and short-lived arrangements with other countries. The UPU membership profile is dated 2004 and the contact address was at that time in Galkayo. That's one year after Somali Post's agreement with Emirates Post; so this seems to have been from before Somali Post apparently folded again and had to re-establish its UPU membership (c.f. "Progress Made So Far" [3]). The government also indicated in that March 2012 presentation that it had five staff assigned to postal work but no post offices. However, it "will shortly develop a sector policy & enact legislative framework to establish Somalia Post" and "will appoint the top management who will spearhead the reconstruction effort." It also gave a target date for the relaunch of postal services per Phase I ("Target is to establish functional Headquarter, GPO & 33 departmental offices by January 2013"). Import regulations[edit]
