Image gallery[edit]

I just put the Image gallery back in. I don't see any wiki-policy that forbids this, and it really adds to the article. If someone is worried about undue weight, then we can put in a disclaimer about the actual prevalence of these ads so readers don't think the ads are put up everywhere in Japan. History[edit]

The "history" starts in 1965! How and when the use of tobacco initially spread to Asia and caught on in Japan - did it meet any resistance from the authorities?- is not discussed. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Orthotox (talkcontribs) 05:20, 21 November 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Japanese smoking culture[edit]

Most of what is written in the "Japanese Smoking Culture" section is complete BS. No wonder there are no citations. Most of what is written there should be deleted. Any objections? --Westwind273 (talk) 04:04, 27 March 2010 (UTC)[reply]

I didn't write the bulk of it, but I am more inclined to fact-tag it than to concede to someone so bitey. --Chris (クリス • フィッチュ) (talk) 13:05, 28 March 2010 (UTC)[reply]
The section reads as if it was written by someone from Japan Tobacco. In Tokyo, I have walked behind plenty of smokers who smoked while walking. JT is trying to get them to stop, but just because something is part of a JT campaign doesn't mean it is practiced in reality. The final paragraph in this section is really weird and anachronistic. I have no idea where this information came from. --Westwind273 (talk) 01:53, 10 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Accuracy[edit]

While most of what is said in this article is true I don't think this makes Japan out to be relaxed on smoking. In fact I haven't been anywhere in the world where smoking is more restricted. Here on Tokyo streets one can't smoke in public places. You must head indoors or to the occasional smoking area on some street corners. Similarly most offices and work places have smoking areas. If anything the smoking culture seems to be more mature than places which let you smoke anywhere or where crazy bans forbid smoking indoors yet allow it on crowded streets and bar/shop doorways.--114.164.195.225 (talk) 13:40, 21 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Inconsistency[edit]

The rate of smoking among Japanese men in 2012 is reported as being 52.7%, yet in 2008 it was, according to the "Prevalence" section, only 36.8%. Then, contrary to the claim of a decline, smoking is actually on the increase in Japan. Orthotox (talk) 05:54, 10 August 2015 (UTC)[reply]
