Internet of things[edit]

@LindseyH140: I was about to nominate this page for deletion but thought I'd ping you first. I'm not seeing how this is substantially different from Internet of Things such that it merits its own article. The description is nearly identical and differentiates the two explicitly only by "the changing nature of the ’things.’" If anything, it seems like it should be included as part of the IoT article. Would you consider merging the material there where appropriate? — Rhododendrites talk \\ 03:46, 22 January 2015 (UTC)[reply]

@Rhododendrites: I'd like to take some time today to put together more information to help clarify the difference. Would that be okay?
@Rhododendrites: Thank you for your patience. I would also like to say thank you for reaching out to me first. I put a lot of time into researching this topic after seeing that it wasn't already a Wikipedia topic. I do appreciate you giving me the opportunity to respond before nominating it for the chopping block. In regards to your concerns I have a couple thoughts. First, the IoT page itself leaves a lot a room for improvement (which is noted as being needed at the top of the page). Second, smart, connected products are becoming quite a hot topic - the famous Harvard Professor, Michael Porter, co-wrote a 22 page article that was the Nov. 2014 cover story in the Harvard Business Review. This was just part 1 of a 2 part article. In his article he only mentions IoT a handful of times.
I have some graphics that I think would be beneficial to add to the page and will help provide more clarity with the difference between IoT and Smart, Connected Products. I will do some research this week on how to add the graphic to the topic and how to properly cite it. Sincerely, LindseyH140 (talk · contribs)
@LindseyH140: You can find information about adding pictures at WP:Uploading images. If you do not own the images and if they aren't creative commons (or similar) licensed, they probably won't be ok to upload but take a look at that page. I agree the IoT article could use a lot of work. The question about this one will come down to whether there are sufficient sources which talk about "smart, connected products" (that term in particular) as distinct from Internet of Things. As I read it, while you can make some distinctions it's very easy to see them as mostly overlapping concepts. People introduce new terms which make a small modification of existing ideas all the time in business and academia, and the vast majority of those aren't notable or aren't appropriate for a stand-alone article because only a few people recognize it as a distinct subject. ...But I say all this not having read the same material you have, of course. It does seem like there's a place on the IoT article for this at least. --— Rhododendrites talk \\ 05:01, 27 January 2015 (UTC)[reply]
