Proposal to make article less about "skiing in the mountains", more specific about the sport[edit]

This article seems to be generally about skiing in mountainous areas. There's overlap in this article with ski touring, mountaineering, and the many other [skiing]] topics. I propose that the scope of this article be narrowed somewhat to focus on the sport of international ski mountaineering competition, which is well documented and regulated by bodies such as International_Ski_Mountaineering_Federation. It could also be mentioned that ski mountaineering has its non-competitive side as a form of ski touring in very mountainous areas. --Cornellier (talk) 23:35, 15 October 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Proposal to have an alternate article on ski mountaineering as a non-competitive activity[edit]

Frankly I came to wikipedia to find an article on ski mountaineering as chronicled, for example, by the Alpenglow Ski Mountaineering History Project. I came across that page and that activity and had hoped to turn to wkipedia for more general information. That was not to be, however, since the makeover of this article to deal only with the competitive activity. I have nothing against the competitive activity and applaud a separate article on wikipedia dealing with it. However, as a key sentence in the last version of this article when it dealt with both the "recreational" activity and the competition sport says:

Ski mountaineering may be distinguished from general ski touring by a willingness to travel over any part of a mountain, not just trails for ascending or sheltered powder snow fields for spirited descent. This may include significant rock, ice, or broken glacier sections, as well as high-altitude traverses as part of multi-peak ascents.

That paragraph in itself helps tremendously the reader/researcher to see that this (recreational) activity is different from "ski touring". And the term "ski mountaineering" is out there in books and on the web and the term has nothing to do with the competition. In other words, why does everything have to be a race? :)

My proposal is a disambiguation page called SKI MOUNTAINEERING and one page to go to the recreation and one to the competition. Note, I have used 'recreation' loosely here, as it is certainly a recreation that requires vigorous exertion, specialized skills & equipment, and certainly can be life threatening. In other words, it is not a recreation like miniature golf or bowling. Sp3lly (talk) 10:42, 17 May 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Ski mountaineering in the means of using ski to do mountaineering and discover mountain area have existed long before the ski mountaineering race. My proposal is to rewrite the entire ski mountaineering page in the mean of discovery/recreational use first and then add a subsection for the race event, which are a fairly recent invention Marc — Preceding unsigned comment added by Marc.oggier (talkcontribs) 02:24, 24 September 2015 (UTC)[reply]

I disagree with the proposal. The proposed approach is one followed for cross-country skiing and cross-country skiing (sport). That was appropriate for a sport that extends deeply into Olympic participation. I suggest that it's premature for this article until a lot of material accumulates in both the recreational and sport activities. Until then, simply have appropriate sections, covering each. I disagree with the proposal. Ditto User:HopsonRoad. --Cornellier (talk) 17:19, 31 January 2016 (UTC)[reply]
