All American Girls[edit]

Interesting story.

We were working and producing songs for our second album at Starr Recording Studios in Philadelphia right before Sister Sledge's "All American Girls" album came out.

George Weir, on saxophone and a good friend [although I don't remember any tracks that actually used the saxophone] was also an occasional saxophonist for Sister Sledge. George had a tremendous crush on one of the sisters Sledge. Sister Sledge was booked into the studio for the upcoming album, which didn't have a title yet, right before us and/or right after us.

When we recorded the song "All American Girl," written for the Womens U.S. Field Hockey Team, comprised mostly of the Ursinus College A Team, and one very close friend of mine, Margot, in 1980. The Olympics had admitted Women's Field Hockey into the games for the first time and they were scheduled to play in Moscow. Unfortunately, Bonzo and his bimbo actor for president [an idea that somehow materialized from "In Like Flint" with James Coburn, 'How diabolical, an actor for president!', pure fiction used to pick a presidential candidate after Carter gave away the Panama Canal, drove gas prices through the roof, and proved that a rocket scientist, or a nuclear physics scientist, is not really smart enough to run the country].

Terry James wrote about one of the U.S. Womens Hockey Team players and her expected schedule after starring in the Olypmics representing the United States of America. Unfortunately President Reagan, in a fit of presidential overstepping the bounds of politics, forbade the U.S. teams from going to Moscow and screwed the careers of every member of the U.S. Womens Field Hockey Team; the Olympics are supposed to be politics free and our Congress should pass a law forbidding presidents from saying or doing anything that would prevent atheletes from playing in any Olympic games. So the song "All American Girl" sings about a girl who plays hockey for her country in the Olympics and the hectic schedule she keeps travelling Europe and Eastern Europe, even though she never got to do so owing to the sheer selfishness of an actor as President of the United States of America.

Well, when someone on the Sister Sledge production staff heard the title of the song, "All American Girl," it was quickly pluralized into "All American Girls" for the upcoming title for sisters Sledge newest album, now know as "All American Girls."

The song "All American Girl" represents the first time anywhere that the phrase was created, since until that time all "All American" atheletic titles, honors, and recognition, were held exclusively by male atheletes, and bestowed upon women atheletes equality of recognition and title for their atheletic achievements.

The idea was strictly that of Terry James, while a lot of people have hitched their wagon to the idea that women too can be All American, deserving of recognition as are male football players who are awarded the title "All American." It was written and created in a time when the very idea of bestowing the title "All American" to any woman was taboo, unheard of, it just wasn't done.

So Sister Sledge and Terry James broke the ice on atheletic and Olympic equality for women thus killing off such biased and bigotted ideas as a male only "All American" title.

More interesting, Margaret Cho adopted the phrase for both a television show and a comedy album, as others have used the phrase, and it has finally achieved its intended goal as an accepted, even lauded and covetted, title and award for women who are atheletes, or in other professional fields of endeavour.

"It's enough to know that my words and lyrics, and that my orignal title for a song, can become a real idea which has finally changed the real world and made it a better place for Women's Equality." says Terry James, originator of the phrase "All American Girl."

Suggestion for new template[edit]

This article gives me an idea for a new template. At times, one can read in Wikipedia templates saying that an article is about a person who has recently died, so contents of the article might change as new information comes to the fore. Joni Sledge died recently as I type this (March 12 2017) but does not have her own article in Wikipedia, so could we introduce a new template saying "This article is about a group of people which includes a member who has recently died" for the same reason as the other template?81.140.1.129 (talk) 21:35, 12 March 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Template:Recent death is not a "person has died" alert, it's for cases where "many editors (perhaps dozens or more) are editing the article on the same day, and it should be removed as soon as the editing goes down to a normal level again". Pittsburgh Pirates, gay anthem[edit]

I think the article should reflect how famous the song was in 1979, as the song of the World Series champion Pittsburgh Pirates.

Is the issue that it says Debbie Sledge instead of Debruine? If you can provide a reliable source, we can make the change. However, I don't see any good sources using the name "DEBBIE DEBRUINE". Vandalism[edit]

This page continues to suffer repeat vandalism from the user Sledge scamlikely. Unless they are just trolling (especially judging by their user name!), they seem to be under the delusion that either they are Kathy Sledge or they are representing her, and have even left comments on my talk page threatening me with legal action for undoing their nonsense. I find it unlikely they have the authority to do this, not least because I imagine Kathy Sledge could do better than employ lawyers with such an atrocious standard of English. Misinforned[edit]

I am a family member of "sister sledge". I have repeatedly made updates to this page reflecting the wishes of the artist "kathy sledge" who is the legal sister sledge trademark owner.

Only to be re edited with inaccurate information that could be tortious interference with regard to the legal entity. Requests to mflet1 to "cease and desist" have been ignored and data is replaced almost instantly with untruths. Blocking this user is hereby requested Sledge scamlikely (talk) 22:18, 25 October 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Main photo[edit]
