Merge proposal

Singlewell is not a suburb (see the definition of the term), but simply a residential neighbourhood of the town. Wiki suggestions here say that Within built-up areas, suburbs and inner-city areas are often difficult to define, lack statutory boundaries, have limited published material about them or little to elaborate on with which to create a comprehensive article. Local knowledge would find it almost impossible to find the physical delineation of it. Hence the merge proposal.

It would however be possible to put in some historical information about Singlewell, which would be talking about an altogether different place than today's built-up area. Peter Shearan (talk) 06:41, 3 September 2008 (UTC)

One place or two

Is Singlewell or Ifield really the name of this place? Some pre-20th century maps seem to show two separate places and it is not clear on other 19th century maps whether the joint name simply means that the two names are alternatives. Most contemporary online maps show just Singlewell (with Upper Ifield to the east). Google shows "Singlewell or Ifield" but it is possible that this is a circular reference to the article's geodata.

That suggests that the common contemporary name is Singlewell. The area is currently unparished but the name of the Gravesham borough ward is "Singlewell", so if there is an official name, it too is now "Singlewell". There is now no mention of Ifield in nearby ward and parish names.

"Ifield" already exists as disambiguation page with a link to this article. "Ifield, Kent" redirects to here.

This article was moved here from "Singlewell" in 2008, apparently because "Singlewell or Ifield" was once the official parish name.

I suggest moving the article back, but with a section describing Ifield as the name of an area which now overlaps with Singlewell and is no longer widely used (or is used only for the part south of the A2). If there was previously an official place called "S(h)inglewell or Ifield", then a separate section should be added for that too, but there's insufficient material to justify an article using the historic double name.

I've checked and there has never been a Singlewell or "Singlewell or Ifield" parish. I followed your line of thinking and was about to do what you suggest until I did this search. What I'd like to know is the origin of this name. It isn't a postal locality or an electoral ward (often these websites are created from these lists) so I'm not sure where it is coming from. The parish explanation was just plain wrong, not even the ecclesiastical parish was called that and there is no evidence of any merger. MRSC (talk) 07:53, 31 July 2010 (UTC)

I'd done the exact same search, but had concluded the the results were unacknowledged derivations from enwiki. Looking again at the search results, it looks like "Singlewell or Ifield" has somehow propagated as a subdivision of DA12 (example), but not by Royal Mail (or at least not on their current lists). My guess is that someone compiled a list of placenames from out-of-copyright OS maps and so, almost like a trap street, "Singlewell or Ifield" got included. — Richardguk (talk) 10:55, 31 July 2010 (UTC)
