Spooklights?[edit]

lost vote to become state capitol?[edit]

At Gardner, Colorado it says

When Silver Cliff was a booming mining town (if only one vote had been cast the other way, Silver Cliff would now be the state capitol and not Denver), ....

It seems that this was near the time of statehood for colorado, but I haven't found any good citation for this claim, or the stories behind it. Anyone know? ★NealMcB★ (talk) 00:51, 22 November 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Pure myth. The state capital election took place on 8 November 1881. Look all you want in old newspapers covering the story at the time, and you will find no mention of Silver Cliff even being in contention. The winters are cold in those little mining towns, and before TV there was little to do except hang around the bars and swap yarns until everyone in town believed them.
