Rape and murder, or just murder?[edit]

I am confused.

At present, the section of this page relating to Mitre's 2020 murder of a 22-month-old girl includes the following sentence: "The statutory rape charges were later dropped after evidence showed the girl was not sexually assaulted". This sentence is sourced to a Spanish-language source, and I cannot read Spanish, so I cannot verify the information.

On the other hand, Reuters, the New York Daily News, Sports Illustrated, and NJ.com all clearly state that Mitre was convicted of both rape and murder in this case.

Which is it?

I added the source originally - am fluent in Spanish and read many articles about this case. This one from Proceso is one of the best, in my opinion, in summarizing the situation. The author was present during most of the trial proceedings. Within the article, it states that Mitre was originally charged with femicide and "violación impropia" (which doesn't translate super well to English, but is roughly equivalent to statutory rape or sexual battery). However, during Mitre's trial, it was proven that Inés (the girl) was not sexually assaulted (sentence reads in Spanish: "Después, en una de las audiencias, el segundo delito quedó descartado, pues se demostró que Inés no fue atacada sexualmente"). All Mexican media sources I have consulted show the single charge of femicide, which was what the Attorney General's Office of the State of Coahuila announced. In my opinion, somewhere, one of the mainstream publications you referenced saw the initial charges (when he was first arrested) and didn't do their due diligence in clarifying what crime Mitre was actually convicted of as part of the outcome of his trial. That could have set of a chain reaction, with other outlets potentially going off that erroneous reporting and coming to the false conclusion that Mitre was also charged with rape - when, in fact, he was not. Pozzi.c, thank you very, very much for your explanation and for taking the time to ensure the accuracy of this page. If not for you (and maybe for other editors with Spanish fluency), this page would likely have followed the English-language sources and ended up equally inaccurate in its coverage of this horrendous crime. 74.67.6.88 (talk) 22:34, 3 February 2022 (UTC)[reply]
