Merge?[edit]

This article seems to deal with the same place as La Valley, Colorado, about which we've had an article since 2016. In cursory look at Google hits, I'm unable to determine which name is currently more commonly used. (The OpenStreetMap has both labels, and the Google Map has no label at all, though searching for either "San Francisco, Colorado" or "La Valley, Colorado" brings one to this location.) The articles should probably be merged, but I can't tell which should be merged to the other. Anyone knowledgeable about the area out there? Deor (talk) 23:17, 15 February 2021 (UTC)[reply]

They do seem to be the same[edit]

Yes, they seem the same, [1]. The ref [2] uses "San Francisco" as the primary name, but I don't know enough to distinguish here. Need a guru.

Additional information[edit]

The National Register nomination form for several churches, including the one in San Francisco, only uses San Francisco.

Figure 6 on page 25 of the form shows a map with two San Franciscos (the lower one is the one in question) but no La Valley.

A map on page 62 shows La Valley and San Francisco as separate places.

A History Colorado page for the church says "Iglesia de San Francisco de Assisi is significant for Hispanic Heritage as the central gathering place for the community of San Francisco (La Valley)."

GNIS favors La Valley and gives San Francisco as a variant name, but GNIS is sometimes wrong.

I live an hour away and always have heard it called San Francisco, but now I am less confident.

The 3rd edition of the place names book cited in the La Valley article also has a separate entry for San Francisco in addition to the one for La Valley. Jeffrey Beall (talk) 16:41, 16 February 2021 (UTC).[reply]
