The Church's 'complicity'?

As part of the 'Criticism and interpretation', is anything (significant) extant with respect to the Church's 'direct' role in this tragedy re the Friar's scheme to defraud both families? Albeit, he has good intentions in doing so (for the sake of love), but we all know where that can lead. I don't expect there was such criticism of this/his role before about 1900, primarily due to the Catholic Church's power and influence, but i would think there must be some discussion or evaluation of the point since then, given the public disrespect for/disagreement with many of the Church's policies and practices, especially in the last several decades. What I mean is, yes, the lovers are star-crossed, but that fate is played out directly due to the Friar's scheme. Any comments? I'm sure some in the community here can find something on this.66.81.104.237 (talk) 21:38, 17 May 2014 (UTC)
