rag on the spoke[edit]

I've seen a few variants on the idea that Clayton tied a piece of cloth to the wheel to count its rotations. Wallace Stegner's The Gathering of Zion (1964) states "He tied a rag on a spoke and all that day walked besides the wheel and counted the rag every time it came around" (page 132).
