Name for this concept[edit]

Someone proposed that "anal douching" might be the common name for this concept. I am not sure - I found sources calling it "rectal douching". Anal douching seems to me to be what a bidet does, which is anal cleansing. This article's title should match whatever the sources call it. Blue Rasberry (talk) 21:28, 18 June 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Yes, I mentioned that I think that "anal douching" is the WP:Common name for this topic. I base that on my familiarity with the study of sexual topics, in this case ones that discuss the health aspects of anal sex, and on Google hits; compare the Google hits for Anal douching to the Google hits for Rectal douching. Also see that they are talking about the same thing; anal douching is not equivalent to what a bidet does (otherwise known as a form of anal cleansing), not in common use anyway. And since WP:GOOGLEHITS and WP:Search engine test caution relying heavily on Google hits, see this "Anal douching" Google Books search and this "Anal douching risk" Google Books search. Douching, whether vaginal or anal, is discouraged by health experts (generally anyway), and sources usually mean vaginal or anal/rectal douching when they state "douching." Flyer22 I still am not sure. What sources that are worth citing would you present that use that term? In the Google searches, I see academic and medical articles for "rectal douching" but pop media sources for "anal douching". Changing the search to "douche" gives a different return. The term "enema" is also used to mean rectal cleaning, even when I think the term is supposed to refer to colon cleaning. With the Google books - I see twice as many hits for rectal versus anal in books. What are you seeing?

As for you not being sure that anal douching and rectal douching are the same thing, I advise you to look at the sources; there are various WP:MEDRS-compliant sources that define anal douching in the same exact way that rectal douching is defined (this is clearly seen on Google Books). Not all of those are high-quality; nor do they need to be to support that matter. I don't see why you doubt that anal douching and rectal douching are synonyms.

Whether we move this article to Anal douching or leave it titled Rectal douching, Another Believer was correct to have "anal douching" redirect to this Rectal douching article you created, and I was correct to add it to the lead as a WP:Alternative title. And on that note, the lead should be expanded to mention the anus, and scholarly book sources (as opposed sex guide or pop psychology sources, unless written by sex experts) or other scholarly sources should be included in the article to support the "anal douching" terminology. There is also the option of creating a Definitions section, which does not necessarily require really good sources, but rather sources that pass the WP:Reliable sources guideline. Like I recently mentioned of a different sexological topic, I can provide scholarly sources for my assertions; but, as was the case with an editor defining the term gay strictly, or the case with an editor defining the term lesbian strictly, it is a pain pulling together all those sources, especially when editors can make the trip to Google Books themselves. While I might not list sources on this talk page, I will eventually add sources to the Rectal douching article. Flyer22 (talk) 23:55, 18 June 2015 (UTC)[reply]
