Trans-Continental Railway to Come?[edit]

In my class, one of the other students mentioned in his presentation that Colombia recently contracted a Chinese company to build a railway connecting the Pacific Ocean and the Carribean, as a competitor to the Canal. I came here looking for more information. Anyone have any details? A planned railway of this magnitude would have huge impacts on the transportation/shipping industry, the Colombian economy, and would be appropriate in this article. DaveXB (talk) 02:57, 27 October 2012 (UTC) China has indeed proposed a cross country rail link through Colombia. However the direct distance from Buenaventura to Cartegena is approximately 864km. A railway line could be about 3 times that distance and would have to transverse the Andes. Hence the proposed line would not be between these two cities. It would be a short distance from a new port on the northern Pacific coast of Colombia to the Atlantic side.[reply]

Venezuela-Colombia-Ecuador Line[edit]

I couldn't find any articles in English or Spanish on this line and it's mentioned in this article in several places. I only found a blog forum post but it seems to only say that in 2008 Hugo Chavez met with the then Colombian President and they agreed to build the railway. I'm sure it's far more complicated than that and since Chavez had plans to build lots of railway lines in Venezuela (many of which have never been constructed) this should be clarified.Monopoly31121993 (talk) 13:58, 27 April 2014 (UTC)[reply]

On Wikipedia, there is too much speculation on planned railway lines, especially in developing countries, which never seem to materialize. Colombia isn't an exception, see also the unsourced 2014 Chinese proposal for a transcontinental railway. A forum is not a valid source according to Wikipedia policies. In my opinion these proposals should only be included in an article after an agreement is signed (which will certainly receive press coverage).--Aaron-Tripel (talk) 15:49, 27 April 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Including Rapid Transit in the infobox stats[edit]

Should the total length of the network include rapid transit? If so, the total length of the standard gauge network would be longer because the Medellin Metro would be included. It would also be appropriate to include the length of electrified line in that case. I've looked at other country rail network pages and it seems most have the lengths of the mainline network only, but the Canada page seems to include the length of electrified line, which as far as I know would only be urban rapid transit.
