Merger proposal[edit]

I propose that Puerto Rico Highway 18 be merged into Puerto Rico Highway 52, Like the example of Puerto Rico Highway 66 & Puerto Rico Highway 26. I think that the content in the Puerto Rico Highway 18 article can easily be explained in the context of Puerto Rico Highway 52, and the Puerto Rico Highway 52 article is of a reasonable size that the merging of Puerto Rico Highway 18 will not cause any problems as far as article size or undue weight is concerned. 24.50.205.152 (talk) 16:29, 17 April 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Also, the merge is proposed because this article is too short. 24.50.205.152 (talk) 16:37, 17 April 2017 (UTC)[reply]
  • Oppose - Route is a freeway that is a few miles long, notable in its own right. Cherry picking to merge it with PR 52, as there is no relation between the two independent routes besides the unsigned PRI-1 designation, which still does not give basis to merge. For the record, I support splitting PR 26 out of PR 66 as that route is notable in its own right too. Dough487210th 01:32, 18 April 2017 (UTC)[reply]
  • Oppose Why? --Rschen7754 18:21, 18 April 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Because highway 52 is basically an extension of the older road (PR-18), like PR-26/66. Also, the same thing happens with Interstate 110/CA-110, and Interstate 210/CA-210 in California, but theses pair of highways had the same numbers and California 110 is inferior to the interstate highway standards. And the highway is colloquially known as "Highway 52", even on the segment that is officially Highway 18. 24.50.205.248 (talk) 22:28, 18 April 2017 (UTC)[reply]
"Because highway 52 is basically an extension of the older road (PR-18)" - source? We don't do original research here. --Rschen7754 00:14, 19 April 2017 (UTC)[reply]
The user was probably referring for both, PR-18 and PR-52 SkyscraperCity's articles (in spanish); and if you look on google maps, the 3 left lanes are as a continuation of this highway, turning into PR-52 [1], while the 2 right lanes continued into PR-1 S and theses 2 lanes are even signed as a right exit, while the left 3 lanes are not signed as a left exit. A similar discussion of this merging can be see here, but the only diference is that I don't propose renaming it to "Interstate PRI-1" 24.50.205.248 (talk) 22:43, 18 April 2017 (UTC)[reply]
  • Oppose -
"Like the example of Puerto Rico Highway 66 & Puerto Rico Highway 26" : We don't make decisions about article merging based on whether or not other articles have been merged. Merging is decided on each articles' own merits.
"the content in the Puerto Rico Highway 18 article can easily be explained in the context of Puerto Rico Highway 52" : Maybe so, but so what? It could be equally be argued that 'the content in the Puerto Rico Highway 52 article can easily be explained in the context of Puerto Rico Highway 18'. In particular PR-18 is fundamentally a freeway that makes its way almost entirely thru (the San Juan) urban area. PR-52, on the other hand, makes its way almost exclusively through rural areas.
"the Puerto Rico Highway 52 article is of a reasonable size...the merging of Puerto Rico Highway 18 will not cause any problems as far as article size or undue weight is concerned" : I am not totally sure what argument the editor is trying to make with those statements. In any event, we don't delete, or even merge articles, simply because an article is a stub or stub sized. Small articles are simply assessed as stub and kept to stand on their own right.
"the merge is proposed because this article is too short." : Again, this is not a valid rationale to merge an article.
"Because highway 52 is basically an extension of the older road (PR-18)" : This might be the way it looks to people from San Juan area, but we could equally argue that to people from the Ponce area PR-18 is an extension of the longer PR-52.
In any event, these are two different roads: they have their own names, have their own signing and, perhaps most important, have their own exit numbering and mileage markings -- as you head southbound from SJ towards Ponce, the exit numbering resets to zero (or, "one" to be exact) once you hit PR-52. Likewise when you head northbound from Ponce to San Juan, the exit numbers run in decreasing order until Exit 1: and once you pass Exit 1 on PR-52, the next exit is Exit 8 on PR-18.
Perhaps the submitter has not expressed his concerns/arguments convincingly enough but, as for me, I don't see one single reason to merge the two articles. Mercy11 (talk) 02:04, 21 April 2017 (UTC)[reply]
