Just Russian, or also Ukrainian?[edit]

Presumably the latter? BobFromBrockley (talk) 14:10, 3 October 2022 (UTC)[reply]

No. It originates from a Russian word for tailor. Ukrainian is Кравець, with corresponding surnames. - Altenmann >talk 21:21, 28 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Proposed merge of Portnow with Portnov[edit]

Only a letter of difference, from the same etymology, the lists have significant crossover, and neither is very long so they wouldn't be overwhelming. QuietHere (talk | contributions) 09:12, 20 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]

  • Oppose. I rewmoved overlaps. There are lots of surnames with same etymology and small difference. These are still different surnames. Precisely for this reason we have lots of surname navigational boxes, because people may easily not remember the correct spelling of a surname of a particular person. Shneidr or schneider or schnieder or whats not. - Altenmann >talk 17:42, 20 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]
I suppose it's fine so long as the overlaps are managed. I shall withdraw. Thanks. QuietHere (talk | contributions) 16:37, 19 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]
